Hi,

Just a quicky.

I recently purchased a GTX 570 Frozr3 and got it clocked stable at 850 Core / 1700 Shaders / 2000 Memory

Although FPS is nice and flowing, is the Q6600 bottlenecking the performance? and should I just go ahead and get an i5 2500k?

Cheers

Yeah I'm running it at 3.5, was at 3.6 but gets too hot on air especially having to use at least 1.4v to stop it BSOD'ing.
Was getting to temps of about 75 on intelburn thingy.

Just wondered if it is limiting it, as I am looking to get BF3 and SWTOR - BF3 will be run at lowest detail anyway for competitive reasons.

Otherwise yea 2500k can wait until after xmas.

Agree with Gazzaa on this one, I also upgraded from q6600 to i5 2500k and the performance increase is significant. Your 570 will certainly not be at it's full potential on the q6600.

i5 2500k @ 4.6ghz,Asus P8Z68 Deluxe mobo, 8GB Kingstone hyperx grey,
GTX 580, 1tb spinpiont f3 hdd

I upgraded from a Q6600 two weeks ago, the difference in games is not a little, in most games it is huge. BC2 for example my fps is over 100 on some maps and was 60 on the q6600. Most of my games have gained at least 15-20 fps using the same card I had in the q6600. It really is night and day.

The above is with a 4.7ghz overclock, no idea what speeds are stock vs q6600 with an overclock. So my advice, upgrade to the 2500k for a nice boost which you will notice big time. You will get a nice amount for that q6600/mobo/ram (I did two weeks ago, paid for half my new setup). You will probs only need an extra £150 to get a complete new 2500k/mobo/8gb ram.

Yes definitely agree there, i had a [email protected] with a GTX480 and am now running a 2500k and even though i am running at stock speed it absolutely destroys my old Q6600.

That said you should still have enough power there for a while unless you are a real fuss pot (like me) so maybe hang on for this Ivy Bridge chip.

This is the sort of thread that makes me want to scratch the upgrade itch :p
My Q9550 isn't struggling at all but it's not just the CPU, I'd like a more up to date chipset, sata3, usb3, DDR3 etc. I would then get better speeds from my SSD also.

If you can afford it and enjoy using your PC then why not upgrade it to get the most enjoyment out of your system. If you can't afford it and things work fine, then it's an easy decision not to upgrade.

I used to upgrade to the newest tech just because it was there, which is fine for some but after a while it became apparent I was a little addicted to having the latest tech rather than actually using it. Plus I was into overclocking, different story :)
