Not sure if this is to be expected but 2 of my friends who overclocked their Dual Core CPU's to 4.0 ghz speeds found that after about 6-9 months their Overclocks slowly declinded to the extent to only be stable at stock 3ghz speeds.

I'm just wondering now that I've been running my Q6600 @ 3.6 (2.4 stock) for nearly a year has anyone experienced this type of problem?

Should I expect the same and plan ahead for an upgrade?

Degradation does occur.

I recon cos they were at 4Ghz, voltages were slightly higher, current draw was increased and its slowly decreased the CPUs capacity to function at higher speeds.

High temps also contribute, so 4ghz at 60C at 1.45V or whatever you run at with these chips has probably made them kick the bucket.

depends on the voltage needed to take the chip to that speed, increased voltage will reduce the chips lifespan, some go quickly, others more slowly.

My 2500 barton for example is still at 3200 many years later.

My friends CPU's were E6750's @4ghz (Stock = 2.67ghz)

Not sure about everyone else but when I retire my Gaming Rig, I normally hope it is still working and use it to upgrade my server - So long as it still works at Stock speeds I will be happy.

I'm not sure how much longer my rig will hold out, the i7 Platform seems to be quite a big leap in performance; but the x2 should keep me gaming for another 6months at least I hope.

Don't think I've heard of a Q6600 burning out. The Conroe-based chips were usually very hardy.

Great thanks guys. So I should be able to retire it to my server, maybe clocking back to stock; when I feel the need for an upgrade ;-)

Nothing really stressing it so far games wize ! lol.
