Q6600 died. Time for an upgrade or get another one used?

Little bit of a dilemma. I'm pretty sure my Q6600 is dead and I'm wondering whether I should buy a replacement one for around £50 second hand or put that towards something new, like a 2500k?

Bear in mind that I will have to buy a new mobo and ram if I go the upgrade route, plus I'm pretty happy with my current mobo (an EVGA 780i ***). The system is mainly for BF3 and work things/web browsing.

BF3 is mostly GPU based. Although im sure my cpu struggles.

Upgrade would be good but if you can get away with spending £50 then why not? Even get a 9550? Depends on your wallet.

Yeah, that's one other option that just occurred to me: an LGA775 upgrade. Don't know much about those CPUs though. What should I be looking for?

9550? 6700?

If you're sticking with LGA775, I'd look at a second hand Q9550 or a Q9650. If you can get one that clocks to 4ghz, they'll run pretty much any game you can think of at decent fps.

Q9550 is what I've got, depending on price difference I'd take it over the Q6600, especially second hand because I doubt there'll be much in it. Double check that your motherboard has support for the 45Nm fab CPUs though.

BF3 is supposedly one of the first games which LGA775 chips are finally a bottleneck btw, check around the forums for benches etc.

I have a Q9550 running @3.81 with a P5Q Deluxe MB, 6GB Corsair Domminator and a Sapphire 5850 Toxic 2GB, all of which allows me to play BF3 with everything on high (not tried ultra as it looks pretty enough) just fine, no lag spikes at all....

They are super easy to oc, I had mine running for a while @4 but decided to lower it a little as I am now keeping it for a while longer.

I've had this cpu since 2008 and I doubt I will switch it until the end of next year or maybe even 2013....

My Q9550 kit with cpu - ram and mobo is up for grabs following my recent upgrade :D

PM if interested and I'll tell you where.

Q9550 would be a good chip to put in there but I'd be very very suprised if the Q6600 is actually dead - I've used and abused them for years including putting stupid voltages (1.7v watercooled) through them and never managed to kill one.

Just make sure to test the chip on another system/mobo before you throw it away or something. Hard to just kill a CPU unless you put lots of volts through it.

Most probably his mobo, psu or malfunctioning ram

I've already tried switching out the mobo, PSU and ram. Pretty sure it's none of those things. I've been told the red LED on my mobo indicates either a PSU failure or CPU failure and, as I say, I've already ruled out a PSU problem.
