I currently only play games & browse the web,i've got a Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz and was wondering if it's worth changing to an E8600 as most of these clock to 4.0Ghz?

Or would it be better keeping the quad?

Thanks.:)

I would keep the quad (unless you can get a cheap E8600!), I don't think the performance increase you will get will be significant, especially if you game at higher resolutions and are held back by your 3dcard.

just put some money towards a better heat sink and some good fans, the performance boost wont be that great..especially for the cost of it.

Looks like i'll keep the quad, had it for over a year now so i'll try to make it last till i7 becomes cheaper.

Think i might have a go at clocking it a bit further, what should i expect from it?

The Vid is 1.2375 & currently running at 3.4Ghz (8 x 425) 1.3v bios and 1.288 in Cpuz.

Motherboard is an Asus Maximus formular with 8Gb of G.skill PC8500.

Thanks Paul.

Keep the quad, and do as suggested get a better cooling system and up
Your QD to 3.8 - 4gig I have hit 4g but it did get a bit hot and was not stable
so I think I will just spend a few quid and get better cooling and just wait until
prices come down and to see what going to happen over the next 12 months
you got to draw the line some where or you will be up-grading your CPU every 4 months instead of moors law of 18 months.

Cheers

that looks like a good chip. save your money and just see how much further you can push it. :)

Got it running @3.6Ghz with 1.375 volts in bios:) had this chip for over a year now bought it from a competitor as no where in the UK had them listed at the time.

Think i'll have a go at water cooling and see if i can push it further.

Keep your quad - especially when i7 is almost here.

Good advice.

You wouldn't see any noticable improvement in your system performance if you went to an E8600 - higher 3DMark scores at 4Ghz compared to a 3.4Ghz Q6600, but that's about it.

Save money and splash out on I7 when here.
