Q6600 - futureproof?

Hi guys and gals.

Do you know if there would be any point in purchasing an Intel Q6600 around Christmas? Would it be a good buy? My processor budget is £200, and i dont really want to upgrade for a while.
Will Intel be releasing anything near that time that will blow the Q660 out of the water?
Basically how futureproof is the Q6600 if i would be purchasing it around Christmas?

Thanks.

Come Christmas, Penryn based CPUs will just be round the corner so if you can wait another couple of months you might get something even better, but saying that they could just be released at the top end first.

I want to get a new rig and have Xmas in mind, but as far as being futureproof goes i look at it like entering a race you can never win. It doesn't matter how long you wait, as soon as you enter the race you'll start to fall behind as technology will always move ahead!

Get the most you can for your budget at the current time..

I get this question all the time "How much will a new computer cost me?"

My answer is always the same "As much as you want to spend on it."

I always get a customer/friend to give me exactly what they want to spend on it, with a little indication of priority (general surfing / games etc) and then build them the best RIG fit for purpose I can get for that amount.

If your budget now is £200-00, you have two options. Quad core Q6600 for the fact that it has 4 cores, or the E6850 at 3.00 GHZ will give you some pretty rocking performance in current applications/games. In terms of future-proofing, I don't really think there is such a thing in PCs. Future-proofing lasts around 6 months in my opinion.

If you only want to spend the £200 in December, then start asking the same questions around November, as only then will the answers you receive be of any consequence (valid for 6 months :p )

penryn 600$ + no point of waiting get q6600 descent gf card gts or xt no point waisting money on gtx upgrade 2008 december or 2009 q1/q2

The way it's going recently I'd hazard a guess a Q6600 will be an entry level offering from Intel within the next year. ;)

Nothing is futureproof

That depends on how long someone keeps their rig a lot of people upgrade every 3 years and more, they buy the best they can and keep it for years so for them it is futureproof as they willnot upgrade for years and to be honest i think if you that sort of person a quad would be better as it should last longer.
I got a friend he still on 98 and P3 and that his only pc, to him it was/is futureproof as he still got it.
