Q6600 Gigabyte DS3 watercooled weird core 0 temp ( Pig to overclock this one )

Q6600 running at 3.06 on a Asetek watercooled dual fan rad.

Bit confused what's going on here, is it normal to get such a variance on the core 0 temperature. It's running SETI@Home

On a side note it was a real pain in the butt to overclock this thing comparred to my E6600, quite a few different settings to make to bios.

with the E6600
DDR2 Overvoltage was at +.1
FSB Overvoltage was at +.1
(G)MCH Overvoltage was at +.3
and I could play about the CPU Voltage Control very easily

With the Q6600 the system refused to start up untill I made the following changes
DDR2 Overvoltage was at normal
FSB Overvoltage was at normal
(G)MCH Overvoltage was at normal
CPU Voltage control is set at 1.35V but there was a little flexability in this

Here's a pic from when I was messing about trying to find the limits

The Q6600 seems very sensitive to extra voltage as if I crank it up to say 1.46 V the system will POST but as soon as windows starts to load the machine just restarts, lower the voltage and windows starts up ok.

I can't really get anything running stabily at anything over 3.06. Not sure whether it's the DS3 Rev 1.0 F12 Bios or my B3 Q6600. I was leaning more towards my motherboard being the issue but with the E6600 I managed to get it running at 3.4 albeit with a load of extra juice running throught the CPU.

Any comments guys

The Rev 1.0 DS3 won't clock the Quads past 340-350mhz. Mine would only take my Q6600 to 333mhz, no matter what I set the multiplier to. It's an older P965 chipset limitation.

As for the CoreTemp difference, my Cores 0 and 1 are 6c-7c warmer under load than 2 and 3.

Thanks for the info Cob.

Thing that's confusing me though about the temps is that 3 of the cores are within 1 degree of each other and core 0 is 5/6 degrees out.

the temp on core 0 isnt odd.

your runnin seti you say,

so surly thats running on core 0, or core 0 is just running more tasks than any of the other cores. That would account for the temp differance.

If you looking to clock the quad nice n high i suggest the p35 ds3p.

Im running my xeon 3210 (2.13) at 3.4+ghz on one. Love it.

Thanks Datamonkey for the tip re the p35 DS3

I've actually got a GA P35 DS3R on order, arriving Tuesday ( Don't need SLI / Crossfire ) hence not getting the DS3P. I'd rather have an extra PCI slot. I'll lap my waterblock and probably the IHS once I make sure the CPU working OK in the new board after a week or so.

Re the Core 0 temp. I'm running seti on all 4 cores simultaneously which is why i don't understand the temp difference. I think it's maybe the waterblock not being flat or the IHS needing some attention personally. I've had it off and back on 4 times to make sure it's seated properly.

I plan to do some proper overclocking when the DS3R arrives.
