Hi,

Now I've got my new Sandybridge rig I want to use my Q6600 as a HTPC, what's the lowest Watt PSU I will get away with?

Nice.

I have a little Cooler Master Mystique which i could use for now but would look smarter in a proper HTPC case.

Any chance you will post some pics when you're finished putting it together?

cheers

Hi there,

My parents are running a HTPC with a Q8200 CPU (same 95W TDP as the Q6600 G0) with a single 5400RPM HDD, a blu-ray reader and integrated Geforce 9400 graphics. This is powered by a 200W power supply (the one that comes with the in-win Bp655 case) and it runs fine.

However, running a 95W quad core in a HTPC can be a bit of a tricky business - I would certainly recommend running a nice performing CPU cooler - as the stock one tends to get rather loud.

Personally, If I were your in your shoes I would sell the Q6600 (should make around £70 on the MM) and the DDR2 RAM put the money towards a lower-power setup (like this excellent 18W AMD fusion board that includes 1080p blu-ray capable graphics and this stick of DDR3). With this setup you could happily get away with a decent quality 120W pico-psu.

I've got an ION as a HTPC at the moment and it's too asthmatic, I'd rather have something with a bit of grunt behind it, I just want to re-use what I've got really.

Thinking of getting a H50 to cool

That's fair enough.

The fusion is quite a bit more powerful than an atom CPU, but compared to a Q6600 they are both small-fry.

May I ask what specific silverstone HTPC case you are using? Perhaps you will be able to fit in a cooler like the Corsair H50 - which can fit in many HTPC cases with 120mm fan ports and keeps high-power CPUs cool while generating relatively little noise.

As for PSU, if the case uses standard ATX mounts then I would suggest looking for the BeQuiet BN134 350W. It will provide more than enough power for your Q6600 system and offers loads of headroom for an upgraded cooler and more hard disks.

Can't remember what model number the Silverstone case is, I must have owned it for 10 years ;)

Thanks for the PSU recommendation

This is more or less what I am planning to do with my Q6600 in 4 years time:). It will become a general purpose computer but not a gaming one any more.
