I am about to move from a [email protected] & 4gb setup to an i5 760, 8gb setup.
I hope to get around 4ghz from the i5

I have an EVGA 570GTX and M4 SSD so will see some gains (at least in benchmarks) from the SSD

Do you think the i5 and 8gb will not make much difference or will it be a fairly big jump? It seemed the right time to buy as it was a reasonable price and I should be able to sell my kit and get back a chunk of the money spent

It's reasonable. It depends how much it will cost you, and if a IB upgrade would be more sensible. I have a feeling your upgrade will be much cheaper though.

8GB is good as well.

I went from a Q9550 at 4Ghz to my 760 and even though benchmarks showed a performance gain, in real world usage the gain was'nt noticeable. Probably the most pointless upgrade i have ever done. However, the upgrade was so that i could sell my 775 bits while they were still commanding high prices. In the end the "upgrade" only cost me £25 after i sold my old bits.

Yeh I figure mine should end up costing much more than that and that's giving low estimates for parts. If anything I will also gain 4gb ram and SATA3 support for my M4

are you getting the 760 second hand, or for a bloody low price?
could you stretch to an i5 2400? its a locked CPU, but it can be set to turbo to 3.8Ghz, and its a world better than the q6600. it'll also put you in the 1155 socket. sticking to EOL stuff always works out more expensive.

Sata3 support on 1156 boards is provided by the awful Marvell controller. I have my Sandisk Extreme 240Gb connected up to it and the speeds are awful. Read speeds are a bit better than the Intel sata 2 controller but the write speeds are terrible, miles slower than the sata 2 controller. If you want proper sata 3 then go for a sandy/ivy setup on 1155.

Q6600 @ 3.6 to i5 750 @ 4ghz.

I experienced a large increase in performance in games. The q6600 bottle necked my 5870 to around 50-60% gpu usage. With the i5 gpu is at 99% in those same games

Its definitely a very effective upgrade.

Super PI 8M - 3min 6 seconds before
Now 1min 59

More importantly everything seems twice as fast. Can certainly tell when playing Starcraft 2 and the action starts. Time to try 8 player FFA
