1. Hi there, I have a pretty decent Scythe infinity tower cooler that I would like to use with a Core i7 920 Nehalem cpu and mobo setup upgrading from a Q6600 setup.

Basically just need to know if there is a new mounting mechanism with i7 Vs Socket775 -> Socket LGA1366

2. Is the current batch of i7 920s a reasonable buy? What sort of clocks on reasonably high end air?

These next 2 questions are prolly best asked in different forum but since I'm here and I know you guys here have i7s and maybe not in the main hardware forum :)

3. Good 6GB+ DDR3 kit for overclocking but good value too (reasonable overclocking but nothing mentally expensive)

4. Good mobo to go with the DDR3 kit with decent options but not too fiddly. I'm currently using an Asus P5K Premium WiFi\AP with my Q6600 at 3.4Ghz

5. Is it worth the upgrade ;) I do a LOT of video encoding at 1080p and my Q6600 is starting to be taking a noticeably long time for h264 encoding. I will be using x264 a lot which is optimised for at least 4 cores.

Thank you very much for advice :)

It's worth noting that the Asus P6T (non dlx) has socket 775 mounting holes as well as 1366, so you could use your cooler without additional kit )

Thanks trouble is the scythe infinity uses a standard clip mechnism and doesn't attach with a backplate so doesn't use mounting holes. What about the notches that clips hang on to?

Cheers.

EDIT - Actually, no I forgot, it DOES use mounting holes but no backplate duhhhhh too early for me to make sense!

Ok, looking around seems everyone digs the Asus P6T so that seems like a good choice. Now the memory....

?

Come on my little chickens feed me with advice :)

3 x 2GB alright?

I'm after stuff that will do at least 1600mhz as a given and overclocking is always fun but not after throwing money to the wind.

why are you upgrading?

Do a lot of encoding at 1080p. Each encode can take 8-12 hours on my Q6600 at 3.4Ghz. So I know the processor will be put to good use. Also just wanna treat myself with the latest gear for once instead of always being 1 step behind. :o
