Q6600 Longevity?

I am building a system for my friend. He wants a Quad Core CPU, and I mentioned the Q6600, as its quite cheap at the moment. But he is a bit concerned about its longevity. He upgrades his main hardware every 3-4 years.

How much life is left in the Q6600, or would it be better going for the Q9450 when they are released, bearing in mind he doesn't want to spend that much on the new system.

He basically does a small bit of encoding, but mainly its for games and the Internet. He has his set his mind on a Quad Core.

He is just using an AMD 3700+ SD at the moment, so it should be a massive jump for him
