Hi All,

Sorry to be such a newbie, but having some issues getting my new basic rig going, to anything more than

I currently have:
Q6600 2.4Ghz Kentsfield Stepping: B Revision: G0
M/b: ECS pn2 sli2+
Memory: 4gb of 2 x OCZ Reaper PC2-6400 (400mhz) p/n: ocz2rpx8002g
Cooler: Air - Xigmatek HDT-S1283

Current temp @ 2.4Ghz - 23C
I can't seem to overclock at all tried various settings that other people seem to use with no problem, but i can't get it to run at all.

I have managed to unlink my memory in bios and set a FSB of 1422 with a multiplier of 9 and a core voltage of 1.6 (memory at 2.3) and the board will post and goes boot vista(x64) but then reboots just before getting to login screen.

Speedstep is disabled.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with some settings to try ? Is there any good applications that work on this M/B to help overclock as I have heard ntune that ships with it is pants. Or is the award bios good enough for this.

Well an FSB of 1422 and multiplier 9 would be 12.7GHz ... hopefully you've made a typo! Try bringing VCore down to 1.5V for now (no need to burn yourself out immediately!) and try a FSB of 350 with a multiplier 8. That'll give you 2.8Ghz, 400MHz more than stock speed (which isn't bad!) - then work up from there, only increasing VCore when you get a crash or unexpected reboot.

I'm at over 3.2GHz and only VCore 1.4125V, so you really don't need to jump to 1.6 immediately.

Sorry the bios says FSB but i quess that is the QDR speed ? I dont have an option to put in a true FSB so do you know what I would need to put in 350 ? Then I will try your settings and get back to you. Do i need to adjust the other voltages or leave them at auto for now, such as MCP etc.

Cheers

Gets slightly further as I can now see the welcome screen in vista, but when it goes to log in it reboots, so still not stable ?? Very strange would have thought I could have at least got a slight overclock with even this ECS board (I know its not the best).

Will have to see how to flash the bios without a floppy drive.

Ok think I will just bite the bullet and get a better motherboard, as not getting anywhere near even 2.8.

Can anyone recommend a motherboard that supports the Q6600 and two 16x Sli cards (Nvidia and need both to run at x16) ? Is P35 chipset the way to go ?

Your choice is between the nvidia 780i and 790i chipsets.

The choice is basically made by whether you want to use DDR2 or DDR3 ram (respectively).

After that, go for a mobo manufacturer that you like, and then the board in your price range.

The EVGA "***" boards generally come out quite well and have good support.

Hey templarsrevenge!

Welcome to OcUK Forums! :)

Is this the board you are using?

PN2 SLI2+ Extreme from ECS is based on the latest nVidia chipset for the Intel platform, nForce 680i, being a very high-end motherboard targeted to the latest and future Core 2 CPUs. Its main features include support to DDR2 memories up to 1,200 MHz, the new 1,333 MHz external bus (FSB) and an out-of-ordinary overclocking support. Nvidia has now a new approach and some motherboards based on their chipsets are now labeled as “designed by nVidia”, meaning that the motherboard was designed and manufactured by nVidia, not by the brand that is selling it. This is the case with this motherboard.

The 680i's arent great overclockers with quad cores, evga brought out a revised edition of the board (the a1 rev) to try and address theese issues. If you really need an sli board the choices are 780i or 790i which means switching to ddr3, however if only using one graphics card id suggest a p45 board.

What cards are you currently using? I tried sli in the past as well and tbh i wasnt that impressed with it either.

2 x Evga 7950 GT 512Mb. Been good enough for me so far. Had trouble with an asus P5 sli board as well. I think maybe going for single card will be a better bet, would just like to get better o/c from the Q6600

A p45 board would be a great choice with the q6600, something like the asus p5q, or the gigabyte boards which also have a good reputation. Which graphics card you choose will depend on the resolution of your monitor and how much you have budget wise:).
