Q6600 OC temps

Hi all,

Just OC my Q6600 from 2.4ghz to 3ghz and was wondering what temps I should be seeing? I have the stock fan (reseated it with a fresh blob of thermal paste and blew all the dust off) and getting around 34-38 on idle and 61-65 on load (using the most demanding game I have)

I left Prime95 running for 15 minutes and it got to 68.

Is this reasonable or should I be aiming to get it a little cooler? If so, any recommendations of a cheap but rugged fan?

Thanks :D

I believe that is good temps for stock, may I ask what settings you used to OC due to the fact I want to OC aswell. Please can you also visit my post to try and help me with my problem? Thanks.

@OP: upto 70 is fine for a q6600 at prime load.

@swaps: 9x333 and adjust voltage to suit, probably 1.3-1.4 in bios should be enough (especially if its a G0 stepping) I'll try and find your thread now.

Mine @3.2 doesn't hit 60 under Prime95, get a half decent ait cooler on it and you can probably take up to 10 degs off the temp with the stock cooler.

To OP download intel burn test (IBT) and run that.
that will test the cpu more than prime

my q6600 B3 @ 3.3GHz reaches 74.C in IBT so your 68.C is fine, but i bet you will hit the 70's in IBt

is your Q6600 a G0 or B3 stepping? use cpu-z to tell you this.
also use coretemp or real temp for your temps.

as for running IBT, open task manager and look for the amount of "free" ram available.
eg. i have 2550mb of free ram so i run the test with 2500mb ram.
also change the thread to 4 (quad core) and then run the test.

if you are happy with it at 3.0GHz that is good,
but with a proper cooler you could easily get it to upto 3.4GHz or higher depending on stepping and VID

edit. +70's .C in temps is okay for stress testing but not for 24 hour use

Are you sure?
+1 for Intel Burn Test, CoreTemp & CPU-Z.

I have an Aftermarket Cooler (Akasa Venom Nano) on my G0 Q6600 and the max it reaches is 72 degrees after an hour!
Stock coolers aren't bad, as I've always got fairly good temps from them, but never over 68 seems a little low, especially overclocked.

intel burn test with a stock cooler at 3ghz is a bad idea considering 15mins of prime he is hitting 68c. seriously get a decent cooler

CPU-Z says mine is a "revision G0" and "stepping B". Yeah I have been using coretemp to monitor the temperature. Running the Crysis 2 demo on Advanced it never goes above 61 and yester-year games never seem to take it over 55.

Its a minor overclock for the mean time, until I get some cash for a better CPU and mobo (don't know why I never OC'ed it when I first got it) but as an upgraded sink will be a lot cheaper for now I might stick with that. 3ghz seems to handle most things fine, I'm quite happy with the performance, an extra 400 couldn't hurt tho :)

but never over 68 seems a little low, especially overclocked.

Yeah I left it running a bit longer and it got to 73.

Thank you for the advice everyone, I will take your cooling suggestions into consideration :)

EDIT: Just ordered the Arctic Cooling freezer 7 pro after your recommendations. Thanks

At stock speeds with my Zalman cooler, my G0 Q6600 never goes over 42 degrees, even running IBT on maximum stress. overclocking to 3GHz really push the temps up that much?

Whick type of Zalman cooler are we talking about, could be the Zalman Reserator Liquid Cooling or something :P

However yes, overclocking pushes the CPU past it's standard capabilities, it draws more current, uses more voltage and generally creates a lot more heat, not so much so for dual cores, but for a quad, it's a big difference.

Also good choice on the Freezer 7 OP.

Yeah you would be surprised, I did a test on stock and under load it hit 55. so a near 18 degree increase when OC'ed to 3ghz from 2.4 is quite a bit.

From what you all say this Arctic Cooler should keep it nice and low.

I use a TRU-120UE on my Q6600 at 3.5GHz/1.38V and I am not happy if my temps go above 65.

I keep them below that quite comfortably when priming and in normal use much lower.

Some people say 70C is fine when under full load in a prime/IBT circumstance but I personally would not be happy with that. My chip has been going strong for some years now and I would fully expect it to keep going for more.

If I were you I would try get the temps down a little, can you drop the VCORE any more and retain stability? You should not need that many volts to run at 3GHz.

I have had my Q6600 running @ 3.6 for about 1year with an Arctic Cooler freezer 7 pro and never once had any issues with heat ( forget now what temps it got up to when stressing it ) , however about 6 months ago my pc started to just switch itself off and not be able to turn on for a few mins , it transpired in the end that the cpu fan had failed and the pc was shutting down due to the default settings in the bios which i am sure are set for a lot higher than 80C , i have since then replaced the fan and dropped the clock to 3.4gig and everything is 100% fine , you will be more than hapy with the cooler as it is an excelent choice.

BUMP

Update: Arctic freezer pro 7 installed. Still overclocked to only 3ghz. Under prime95 max temp I am getting is 54 degrees compared to the (later) 75 degrees on the stock cooler. Idle is 26 compared to 34-38.

Tip: Arctic rules, OC forum users know their stuff :D
