Im really unsure as to whether to get a q6600, i know technically its just two core 2 duos on the same die and not a true quad core, is it better to save the money get an e6600 and oc it and replace it with the new penryn cores when they come out. I'm getting a p35 mobo so thats my reasoning behind it.

Not really, the machine will mostly be used for gaming, internet, work etc. mostly FPS & RTS, i was only contemplating the Quad for Supreme Commander, i know stupid for only one game but i can see most RTS's following suit. I'll get an e6600 and upgrade to the penryn core when it comes out. Also waiting for R700 and G90 thats why i'm only getting a 8800gts at this moment.

Good price overall?

Atm i'm running on a P4 3.4 Prescott, 2gb pc3200 ddr and 6800gt, haven't bothered to upgrade in about 3 years as i haven't really needed to. Nobody in particular put quad core in my head lol, i just thought it might futureproof the system however since the current quads aren't actually true quads i guess i'll upgrade to the penryn cores later on. I dont fancy having to buy a new mobo when the new penryns arrive on top of the processor unless do you believe the p35's wont be as good as mobos released with the penryns in 6 months time?

I do some encoding and i also do 3d rendering however, ive seen the performance gains on the penryns hence why im not entirely sure if its worth getting the q6600, i don't mind waiting and i'm more than happy to get an e6600 and then sell it later on to get a true quad.

I personally don't want to adopt ddr3, considering tight timings for ddr2 have only really come to the fore in the last year i can only assume the same for ddr3.
