Next week Im going to be ordering my new rig, that hopefully will last me another 2 - 3 yrs. Im pretty sure Im going for the E8400 cos that has 3mb cache on 1 core, the quad has 2mb on 1 core and I will be able to overclock the E8400 to 3.6 min, but prob only be able to get 3ghz out of the q6600, But am I making a mastake not getting a quad cos at the moment graphics cards are bottlenecking cpus big time??

I dont do much encoding and dont run lots of progs in windows, but I play the latest games, and my current rig plays then all fine and prob wont notice any diff in games with the new rig, cos im keeping my 3870 card that ive just bought. the main reason for upgrading is cos Ive had my current rig for over 3yrs and its getting a tad unstable now, basically its seem better days, see in sig.

I give it a good blow out every 3months. basically it bsod and resets if I download too fast,, anyway its a good reason for a new rig, and my board is a right pain anyway, plus my dvd has just died. Im thinking to order this lot next week??

if its 2 years, will the MB be changed, if not i would look at a pcie2 board. it may not offer much benifit now but it could be advantagious in the future unless you may consider changing Mbs within those 2+ years

Like I said in my other thread, there arnt meny boards to choose frpm with pcie2 and there too expensive, so if a graphics card thats only supports pcie2 that I buy in the future I will have to buy a diff board, and by then they will be dirt cheap.

Im still leaning towards the e8400 cpu, the main reason is, if the q6600 wont overclock anymore then 3ghz, then I will be missing out on 600mhz with the E8400, and thats a huge difference in speed with intels, and bear in mind Im only using a freezer pro? Edit: A Q6600 at 3.0 will do about 17secs in superpi, a E8400 at 3.6 will do about 13secs and my opty 185 at 2.8 will do it in 30secs. So the E8400 will be over twice as fast then my opty 185.

I dont think I can risk that cos in total thats 1.1ghz it will need to be overclocked. My last system was a athlon 1.2ghz and I upgraded it to a fx55 at 2.6, and that lasted 2.5 years b4 I changed the cpu, and this build im doing now is the same upgrade, so it should keep me going for at least another 2yrs I think if that makes sense? Anyway think my mind is made up, sorry guys.

After having the e8400, i'm gonna try a q6600. The e8400 really wasnt that good.

In what way?? cos I bet you cant really tell much diff going from a amd x2 @ 2.8 to the E8400, unless you do encoding, So going from a e8400 to a q6600, whats the diff???? I still might be drawn to the q6600, but the 2.4ghz of the q6600 really puts me off and I dont really have any more money to spend on a higher quad.
