I could do with some help overclocking my Q6600 if possible please!

A quick discussion with Paradigm has forced me to supply you all with this never ending list of screenshots and photos ;)

So here goes the story.. i've managed to get it to run OCCT for an hour which is stable enough for me.. but any higher results in a black screen when booted into windows.

Here's the spec.. (well enough to calculate OC limits)

Q6600 G0
Gigabyte EX38-DS5
G.Skill PC8500 DDR2 4GB (2x2GB)
Enermax Liberty 620w PSU

As you can see I've raised the Northbridge and FSB voltages slightly, and also upped the DDR2 as it was trying to run it at well below its stock voltage of 2.1v

The rams stock speed is 1066 IIRC.

Try the overclock with the ram set to Auto for SPD timings my Corsair Dominator should run at 1066 (5-5-5-15) but I get all kinds of issues when It gets close to that. Reduce the 1008 ram setting, can you un-link it and leave it at 800?

Apologies I'm not an expert but I recall needing 1.47v to get my 1.265vid Q6600 stable. Maybe you need more volts but I wouldn't want to go higher than you already have.

From your screenshots I'm guessing that your Q6600 isnt a G0 stepping?

If thats the case you've got a pretty good overclock and I would be tempted to say stick with that. I wouldn't suggest any more voltage anyway as I think 1.5 is toward the top of what you should go up to on air cooling.

.

are you sure you want to go with that answer?

OP it would seem you have a quite high VID on your chip (i'm in the same boat) this might (and i emphasise might) hinder you progress on your overclock compared to those with something in the low 1.2's.
I hear the safe limit on air is about 1.5v so i wouldn't go above that. However i hear q6600's are nigh on undestroyable (within reason ofcourse so you may get away with it temps permitting). I believe we have some members here running on 1.6 but this is on water cooling.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread as i'm thinking of pushing my chip a little harder (also on a q6600 on a gigabyte board) and am by no means a pro overclocker so i'll be keeping an eye on your progress, good luck buddy.

Can't unlink unfortunately. It does the same thing at auto.. volts can go up a tiny bit more. But there is naff all room as you've said!

No, its a G0 ;)

Its within temperature limits at the moment.. the intel site also reads a max voltage of 1.5 volts for these particular chips. So we're all good there.. mebe I should just settle for 3.4 :p

Going from an E8400 at 4ghz to this doesn't quite have the same appeal in 3dmark Vantage.. but the quad does play games better :)

Your bummed out pal. My old Q6600 had a horribly high vid like your chip and the highest stable clock I got out of mine was the 3.4 your reporting. Personally I wouldnt move those voltages anymore as they are set very high for my liking but I do remember having mine set around 1.45v. I think you have done well with the clock you have achieved. I ended up wanting more ( as you always do ) and I ended up getting a Q9550 which I can clock to 3.8 stable but have it backed off to 3.6

Looks like thats the best it will do m8 ,as mentioned i would'nt increase the voltage anymore not on air anyway. Still a gd overclock realy just a shame u got 1 with such a high vid
