i have overclocked my q6600 to 3gig by raising the fsb to 336mhz,my ram settings are 1066,800,and 667,or auto.in the bios.i have put mine on auto,
is that right ,or should i have it on 800mhz,
my ram is 4gig gskill 800 ddr2,
my cpuz
dram504.0mhz
2.3
5.0 clocks
5

15
52
1t

if cpu-z says its running at 504.0 MHz, thats an effective clock of 1008 MHz. So you are OCing your ram quite a lot. Surprised you were able to boot tbh.

What board do you have, as some board's BIOS give you the RAM clock in relation to the stock cpu FSB, and some tell you what it actually will be.

Try setting the RAM to 667 in the bios, and tell us what clock speed cpu-z then reports.

So your running at 500 x 6 = 3000mhz

Drop the fsb back to 400 x 8 = 3200mhz

3200 should be easily achievable and it means you ram is running at full speed 400 x 2 = 800mhz in a 1:1 ratio.

To you question about settings, put it on 800 since thats what you ram is rated for and what my proposed overclock will give you.

Also pushing your motherboard 500~ fsb might be hitting its fsb barrier.

my motherboard is a asus p5kpl,
changed ram settings to 667mhz
.now i get

dram 420 mhz
4.5
5 oclocks
5
5
13 clocks
44
1t
is this better, thanks, when i try to change the multiplyer theres a box i have to enter 4 digits
do i enter 8x00,

tried running at 8x400 ,put ram on 800mhz,pc wouldnt boot just black screen.

Try 7x800=2800ghz, you will need to change voltages and stuff to make it stable, im just saying using 400 fsb is better than using 500..

What are you other setting.

all ive done is set the fsb from 266mhz to 336mhz,and ram on 667mhz,to give me just over 3gig,it runs stable so i think i might leave it at that,

You might as well use your ram at full speed though...
3.2 is easy just go for that, up to you though if your happy,

prime95 stable or just not crashing stable, big difference.

Hi bcham, is this your mobo?

ASUS P5KPL

  • Dual-channel DDR2 800/667
  • Front Side Bus 1333/1066/800 MHz
If so it doesn't look like it has beefy enough power circuitry to really max out the Q6600's full potential but should still get you to 3.0GHz-3.2GHz which is a fine speed for day-to-day use! :)

It seems you have some great clocking DDR2-800 if you managed to run it stably at 500MHz (DDR2-1000), would probably need to run a few loops of memtest or Prime95 blend on that mem overclock to see if it was stable enough though!

Your also getting your head around Memory-Multipiers which is good, they simply speed up your ram frequency beyond what [1:1] sync offers . . . if indeed your sticks can run without error at DDR2-1000 speeds then here are the configs I think should work fine? . . . you already found one of these! :D

  • 333 x 9 = 2997 [5:6] 399.6MHz DDR2-799.2
  • 356 x 9 = 3204 [5:6] 427.2MHz DDR2-854.4
  • 333 x 9 = 2997 [2:3] 499.5MHz DDR2-999

if i go over 340fsb speed, with ram on 667mhz,pc wont boot,so ive got to stick to 3gig,
and yes thats my motherboard,
i cant find any where to up the voltage in the bios,

Sorry to bump the thread but whats a safe voltage to be running through these babys? Ive just got mine today and its sitting under a H50 and I cant get the thing to post at 3.2 or even 3.0 come to that. Im gutted. Had to sell my Q9550 which would do 3.8 with ease! Also whats the best config for 3.2 or 3.4? Any help would be great thanks.

You had to sell your Q9550? Was it for some extra cash - those are nice CPU's.

Q6600 are strange beasts - my G0 has a VID of 1.325 and I can't overclock it past 2.7Ghz default voltage and it really struggles after 3.2Ghz. It is on a crappy mATX motherboard in my media PC so that may have something to do with it.

1.5V as mentioned above people say, plus it's listed on the intel spec page, but I wouldn't like to run higher than 1.45 consider voltage spikes and the insane temps these chips can get to.
