A mate of mine has offered me his old Q6600 CPU. It's the older version, the one before the G0 stepping. I currently have an E2180 @ 3GHz. Worthwhile upgrade? How much is a reasonable price for such a chip (considering its been overclocked to just under 3GHz)? Ta.

Although we cant advise on price we should be able to help on performance of the CPU
If you are using applications that would use the extra 2 core's then you would see a benefit there.
depending on how much under the 3GHz mark it clocks at will depend if there will be any difference in gaming performance
If as you say its clocking just under 3GHz then game wise there should be similar performance to your current CPU, if you do encoding of music or video file then you should notice a good improvement as most encoding prog's these days will use all 4 core's of the CPU.

So it is a B3 stepping then? Has your mate clocked the CPU? If so what speed did he reach and what were the temperatures? What are your main uses for your PC?

Sorry for all the questions but they are all things that would be helpful to know before further advice is given.

You, would see a increase in performance imo, due to the extra cache. And even with a small overclock would demolish your current cpu. Ifs the price is ok then def. get it!

Yeah, it's been clocked (just under 3GHz, reckons his mobo held him back), not sure of exact temps, but it was under water. MY PC is used for gaming and uni work (Adobe CS3, Oracle etc). Can't find one on the bay, so I've no idea about a reasonable price for it.

the performance increase would only happen if he uses software that's been multithreaded though surely.

anyway, i'd go for the quad, o/c it a bit and smile :p

So I'm looking at a little more than my current CPU costed me? Worthwhile upgrade then? Also, on a totally different note, is it worth me flogging my 8800GT and going for a 512 GTS for games etc?

It's probably a worthwhile upgrade. As well as the extra two cores you'll get more L2 cache.

But certainly don't bother selling your 8800GT for a GTS...that would be a total waste of money as the GTS is only a little better.
