Hi everyone.

Well, my budget upgrade is definately a BIG step up from my 939 X2 3800 setup and i am happy enough with the OC i have achieved.

The setup is:

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L
Core 2 Q6600 (SLACR)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (PWM version)
2 x 1 Gig Generic 8500 DDR
Gainward 8800 GTS 512
Tagan 480W PSU (I think this is hefty enough)

Ok, so with this setup i am currently sitting at 3.0Ghz (375 x 8) with the BIOS settings below. If you could take a wee look at them and let me know if i am missing out on any settings that would give me a further hike in performance i would be grateful.

Its does mash the place up in Everest benchmarks which makes me happy but as usual, if there is more for the taking easily....I WANTS IT. :p

I had to force the 5-5-5-15 settings on the RAM as it would not auto adjust this but i knew it should be that (at least) from its specification.

A couple of points.....Crysis occasionally bombs on me yet when it does, its not the fault of CPU temps and as my GFX card aint OC'ed (yet) but i have boosted the fan speed, it is icy cold too. When i pull the CPU OC back off, no more crashes.

It is prime stable, i ran it for about 6 hours with all cores maxed......none of the cores breached 63 degrees c but there was up to 10 degrees of variance across them, i think this is pretty typical though for an unlapped cooler etc.

I am not too keen on boosting voltages anywhere as this is not somethign i have tinkered with in the past (i am of the Athlon XP2500 EASY OC background..lol), if you think it is a remedy to my crashing then i may consider it.

I had heard (somewhere) that this board is turd at getting the ram voltages right.....is that true? if so.....what is the resolution?....force it?

Anyway...

My screen shots.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Andy

What is the rated voltage of the RAM, as the default with that board iirc is 1.8v, so might need a bit more through it there. Also, as the northbridge will now be overclocked along with the CPU, the MCH overvoltage might need to increase by 0.1

OcUK is proud to announced DDR2 1066MHz, PC6400 800MHz supports CAS 5-5-5-15 with 1GB and 2GB Dual Channel Kits. These modules are sourced from Elixir to ensure maximum compatibility, reliability and performance.

- PC8500 1066MHz CAS 5-5-5-15
- 240pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
- 6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
- 1yr Warranty
- 2.0V-2.3V Power Supply

From that then i would say that your RAM is being undervolted. If you change the System Voltage Control to Manual, go down to DDR2 voltage and put that to +0.2v then see whether you are still getting the crashing.

With changing that the RAM will then be running at 2.0v, so the voltage outlined in that spec.

What programme did you use to read the temps??
If you used speedfan you need to add 15 degrees to the temps, if you use the latest version of coretemp you should get the most accurate temps.

I've got a similar new spec so hijacking thethread if you dont mind :p

Abit IP35-E
Q6600
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB)6400 800
HIS ATI Radeon 3870XT ICEQ3 512
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Arctic Silver 5

I noticed you dropped the multiplier to 8 is this the best way to achive better overclocks? Sorry complete overclocking n00b!

Whats the best tool for overclocking my graphics card and what Overclocks should I be reaching?

Cheers
