Q6600 running too hot

Way to Hot or Not???

Hiya i have a new Rig:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Zalman ZM600-HP Heatpipe Cooled 600W Modular PSU
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5

My CPU temperature was just over 74c The Asus AI probe software gave me the warning?? I'm using the original stock cooler all fans are working in bios everything is at "defaults"

Any ideas???

Mine hits 70 on a hot day with a 3.4ghz overclock, which is annoying considering I have a TR-120 extreme with a noctua strapped to it (I've reseated it to double check I wasn't hallucinating, only 1.45v too. I built another machine with an Arctic Freezer pro because it was on a tighter budget with a q6600 and that thing practically screams if I overclock it at all! I don't seem to have too much luck with this! On the plus side my q6600 doesn't give me any problems, been running it where it peaks ~70ish on prime loads for over a year without instability to speak of

Thats a lot of vcore for a 3ghz clock... do you really need that much... I would imagine that 1.35v load vcore should be enough

Yeah i cant get it stable with a lower voltage, even with the ram at 2.2v under clocked..

Having probs....will phone tech support today

Is that idle or load? If it's load, 74c wouldn't surprise me with a quad and the stock cooler. These are hot chips. If it's idle, looks like you need to refit the heatsink.

What would be a good (cheapish) cooler to replace the stock one on a Q6600? Mine runs around the low 60c when running two BOINC clients and it goes through the roof if I try to run four clients.

Also, my chipset is showing around 51c - is this okay or too much? Can I trust Smart Guardian to report correct temperatures?

The Arctic Freezer Pro is pretty cheap and quiet.

I think Smart Guardian displays the same temps as the bios (you got a DFI mobo?).
Cool, thanks for that.. and yes, I have a DFI BIP35-T2R "Blood Iron" - any way to cool down the chipset further, seems a little hot right now?

install coretemp and prime95, run a small ffts test and take the coretemp readings

Hiya sorry back to this have been busy didn't get time to test - But now i have installed Coretemp and prime95 and run a small ffts test as above:

Those are way to high, what speed is your cpu at, and what cooler are you using.

Seems to me to be your cooling isn't working - just to state the bleeding obvious! Have you re-seated the CPU cooler? How is the cooler being controlled? Auto in BIOS? Are there thresholds that need to be set in BIOS?

Yes have tried re-seating the cpu cooler its on and running at 2109rpm? In bios its all at Fail safe defaults at the moment!

I had this problem when I first got mine too... I didn't realise that less was more with the thermal paste. Took it all off, reapplied the thermal paste and the temps are acceptable now :)

Ok i have re-seated the CPU cooler and it seemed to be correct although now under a 9 minute Prime95 test all my core temps are running between 50-54 is this acceptable?

Certainly a lot better, if you ever decide to overclock, ditch the stock cooler as it's not suited at all. Nice temp drop all the same:)
