Just built my new system with a quadcore q6600 but was getting insane temperatures of 60 degrees C idle and 80-90 at full load!
The cooler that came with the cpu looked like it was seated properly (the push down fasteners are a nightmare to get right)
However after being quite concerned i took it off and reseated it again and now i have 19 degrees idle and about 40 degrees at full load...... quite a big difference!
So to anyone buying one of these Q6600's check your temperaures and make sure your heatsink fan is seated properly!!(very difficult to tell)
Anyone know if i've likely damaged my processor runnin at 80-90 degrees?
(it was only running for a few hours)

That's good news! Does thermal throttling prevent it from burning out even with a loose heatsink?
(this was my first PC build ever so appreciate all your knowledge!!):)

Yep around that. I don't think all the cores are maxed out when i tested it but it's a hell of a lot better than i was getting yesterday!
Think the Q6600 push pull heatsink fasteners are a bad design, it just looks too easy!
