I just got a Q6600 but i applied the AS5 different to the guide on their site. I actually spread it out, which they specifically say NOT to do. I'm wondering if my temps are therefore higher than they should be and I should consider reapplying it?

Temps are 40, 38, 34, 34 on the four cores, accordingto CoreTemp. And that's not on any load. Seems a bit high? Using a Tuniq Tower cooler.

OK, well, as a test, just to put my mind at rest, I reapplied it using the 'proper' method, and the temps are about 5-6 degrees higher!! So proof that spreading thinly works best! I used a razor blade, spreading it wafer thin. Takes ages, but I always found this to be the best method. And now i have proof it's better!!
