Q6600 Temperature

I have a Inspiron 530 with a Q6600.
Recently I did the BSEL mod on my CPU making it 3.0
Afterwards I noticed my temperature dropped 2-3 degrees (i know it's weird) but the mod did work and I have tested and verified it's up to 3.0 now.

My idle temp so far is 50-55C most of the time it stays around 50-53C.
I know my case is small and doesn't have great airflow

I was wondering if these temperature were safe to keep and if it was ok to have it for several weeks

Don't have enough money to buy a heatsink just yet and I rather buy a good one than buy a cheap one

At this time I don't play any games on my computer since it gets to 70C after 15 min of gameplay. So I have no worries about the load temp.

btw yesterday I took off the old thermal paste that came with the computer and have applied OCZ Freeze and noticed it only dropped my temp to 1C... >.<

any clues on why the new thermal paste didn't drop the temp some more?
btw i know it was properly mounted and i applied the thermal paste correctly...
maybe the stock heatsink is just crap?

More disturbing is that other Inspiron 530 users with the same cpu posted their temps as mid 30 and low 40 range...

Is my cpu turning faulty? or just crappy heatsink...

thanks I hope i get some response this time ^^

What version of the Q6600 are running, G0 or B3 - CPU-Z will show this.
Also what software are you using to check temps and how much thermal paste to you apply.

It could be a faulty cpu. The E8500 I RMA'ed after it died was around those sort of temps. When I got my replacement I just want to check everything and had no choice to use the stock cooler and got between 35-40 degrees on idle. I was really surprised.

saying this it wouldn't be classed as a fault because it's within it's safe zone on idle.

i hope it's not a faulty cpu

my warranty with dell is over

any sort of way to check if the cpu is faulty or not?

it's been maybe 2 and a half years after i've purchased this computer
maybe the heatsink isn't working good enough?

btw can artifacts be related to the cpu or is it directly related to the video card?

Artifacts would be related to the GPU, I think this would normaly be memory related.

Try re-seating the cpu heatsink, looking at the instructions here, try what they recommend as sometime less is more.

well...

after applying the ocz freeze that's been my 4th reseating and i have tried ocz and artic cooling's instructions on how to apply and such

im getting to think it might be the cpu or the heatsink

never bother to check the temp of my cpu until now

but no worries i've found another inspiron 530 user with the same cpu idling at 55C so it just might be the heatsink

mine is idling around 45c at 3.2GHz. They do generally run quite hot and with it being summer I am hoping it all adds up since it did run a lot cooler a few months back.

I'm thinking it's more likely to be the heatsink that's the problem, I'm guessing its the stock Intel one? You could get an aftermarket one but I'm wondering if the Inspiron is one of those slim line cases? If so, that's likely to limit what heatsink you could fit in the case.

I use an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, my Q6600 is currently OC'd to 3.4, I'm not sure of the accuracy as I haven't done any calibrations, but according to CoreTemp the idle temps are 42, 39, 37, 37. After a few minutes rendering with a program that utilizes all four cores @100%, the temps have stabilized at 61, 59, 56, 57. The fan isn't making a great deal of noise either, though I guess that is subjective.

Using Intel Burn Test would blast the temps through the roof, certainly in excess of 70 and have the fan sounding like a hair-dryer, but if gaming is all you will be doing you should be fine with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro you mentioned.

Mind you, mine is housed in an Antec 300, which would have a better airflow than an Inspiron 530. If it is very tight on space, I see they do a Low Profile version, I'm not sure how it performs, but I would imagine it would keep you cool enough to game on comfortably. Though it's hard to say for sure where these mass-produced machines are concerned, I'm also not sure how modding would go with that low profile one.

Whatever you do, good luck, it sucks to be held back from gaming by high temps.

what did your temps look like with the stock heatsink that came with the cpu?
