Hey Folks..

Just placed my q6600 under water and was greeted with a scary moment on loading TAT. After loading up prime95 x4 to max out the processor, the temp went into the red and now says on screen... >100 (in red).

Obviously, a bit of panic kicked in but i checked my loop was in order and everything is fine. Now, its get a bit wierd because prime has now been working for the last 20mins and on touching the water tubes, they are in fact cold (or luke warm at most).

I cant feel any great heat coming from the CPU block even though admittedly i cant actually physically reach it, but at 100c i'm sure you'd get a warmth.

Also, I have taken off both side panels and on placing my hand on the rear side of the mother board holding panel thing (Antec p180) there is no obvious warmth where the CPU is. There is warmth on the rear of the north bridge cooler.

Did notice when I first loaded tat, it said -27c.. nice, but not likely :)

So, is there some sort of cold bug with TAT. Its my first venture into the world of intel so i'm a bit lost.

Oh yeah, everything is at stock. Not changed a thing in the bios

Help me!!!! Still feeling mighty nervous seeing a big red >100c sign!!

Cheers

core temp says the same...

Just taken the block off and there is a visible square on it with nothing on.. where you would presume AS5 would have touched. There is a some sign of contact around the square so maybe just the centre of the chip aint touching.

This is pap!

Any thoughts?

just took my low end wc block off .... cleaned (just with cloths) re-applied AC5 using the proper guide (wish I done this in the first place) was getting 75 ish under load now getting 65 ish under load and of course it's not cured yet so should drop a bit more .... well worth the hassle of removing it!!

q6600 running @ 3.4 on Asus P5K ... might tweak some more now I've got a bit of temp headroom back.

Concave IHS, what WB are you using?

Did you apply the AS5 in a cross as per instructions?, try a test mounting first and check for a full central imprint.

its one of these:

http://www2.asetek.com/default.asp?showPage=startside.asp&contentSection=2

(sorry if its a competitor, cant see anything)

Didnt do the cross thing though. So is this concave malarky common. Its just started to crash now so it looks it is temp problem.

Can't be bothered to do lapping etc.. is this classed as a fault. It failed prime using the supplied HSF

Cheers

Edit: That link aint right.. its a Antarctica CPU01. Three inlet jobby...

I meant across not a cross.

It is a fairly common fault, hence the amount of lapping going on.

If it failed at stock settings with the stock cooler it must be severe, I'd try and send it back.

Reason for WB question was Swiftech have a 'fix' using a larger o-ring to bend the base convexly on the WB to better match the concave IHS.

Try a test mount with the AS5 going across the IHS as this.

hmmm.. didnt apply it like that. went for the all over thin look a la opteron 165. Shall have another go tomorrow and let you know..

Cheers for that

For people who own or are just about to buy a Q6600.

QUAD CORES RUN HOT !!!!!!!!!! I DONT CARE IF YOU WATER COOL OR NOT ! THEY WILL STILL RUN HOT.

If you have a Q6600 and it doesnt run that hot then its a luck good cool CPU, well done.

What on earth possessed you to post that? Your not on a MSN chatroom now!! Your average poster on here will research the chip they buy and know that quad core has more heat output.

A post like "BE AWARE OF CONCAVE IHS AND ENSURE YOU GET A GOOD CONTACT WITH THE CPU" would have been better.

Most problems are in the fitting of the heatsink/waterblock.

rightio, i've applied the as5 again as shown on the link and ive turned the block around 180 degrees in an attempt to miss the concave... and temps are now mid 30's

Let clocking comence!!

I'm using the q6600 with a Tuniq Tower, and was wondering if a convex base on the tower base would be a problem?

My idle temps vary hugely, but that might be down to me ballsing up the tower installation... It was a tight squeeze in there, and it moved around a lot lore than it probably should have. :o

Current idle temps are:
Tjunction: 100C
Core #0: 48C
Core #1: 48C
Core #2: 40C
Core #3: 43C

This is at stock.

I haven't got any load temps yet, as i haven't found a decent free program to download, but i'm still looking... :D

Did you even read what the OP said? It's not that his CPU is just hot, its overheating.

Learn to read, then how to punctuate properly, and turn off capslock before posting.

When i used AS5 i just apply a tiny amount in the middle, and let the CPU cooler spread it for you by twisting the block on top of it a bit (not too much) before securing it. Don't be tempted to spread it out yourself. In my experience, applying more AS5 than they recommend actually made my temps worse by quite a bit.

hello again..

well, i think i'm getting somewhere, even though my setup is still struggling a bit with temps. At the mo, and for the last 4 hours, its been priming away at 3.2ghz with cpu-z giving a voltage reading of 1.312.. thats all 4 cores maxing the cpu out at a 100%

The temps, however, are high. They seem to have topped out now at around 82 degrees. Bit high me thinks, but it aint crashing so who knows??

All speedstep etc is turned off so there is definately no throttling taking place. When I set the voltage to 1.45, it booted into windows at 3.6ghz but I didnt prime it.

So, what temps are people getting with their quads.. i've read about the tjunction 100 degrees thing, but cant trust it after coming from my 45 degrees opteron.

Cheers folks

What have you read about it, if you don't mind me asking? I was going to do a search on it, as i'm not even sure what the tjunction is, but meh! :p

When my quad has all 4 cores fully loaded temps can reach around 79-82c. The cpu will throttle when it hits 85c which it used to untill I lapped my heatsink and rearranged my fans in my case.

Fans are arranged like 120mm(Case Rear) <-- 120mm(Scythe 1600) <-- 120mm(Case Front)

Arrows show direction of air flow, so basically 3 fans in a horizontal line all moving air in one direction, provides good air flow.

That reminds me, i need to check the direction of the fan in my Tuniq Tower... I forgot about that!?! Doh!
