Hay guys, im looking to over clock my Q6600 but before i do this i wana know why my temps vary and am wondering if they can be fixed. Running speedFan 4.33 i get the following temps: core 0 - 31c / core 1 - 31c / core 2 - 25c and core 3 - 23c. why are they so different ? and can it be resolved ?

im also looking for anyone who has overclocked there Q6600 B3, using a Fatal1ty motherboard, i would like to know what settings they used.

cheers guys :)

What cooler are you using? It may be the base of the cooler is not level or the IHS of your Q6600 is not level. A little lapping should sort that problem out. However there is also a small chance that you have not installed the cooler correctly. Make sure you check that.

Regarding temps, if you insist on using Speedfan, make sure you add +15c to those temps as it does not read them correctly. CoreTemp is much more accurate.

im using an Asus ArticSquare cooler, the cooler seems to be in its uprite possition. what is the IHS of the cpu ? also what is lapping lol sorry im new to all this pc building shizz lol

iv tried downloading coretemp but im using vista and i get aload of drive errors.

Cheers

Okay, lapping is basically sanding the base of your cooler, and maybe even the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader - the shiny bit on top of your CPU :p ) until it is completely flat.

You acheive this by using several different grades of paper, finishing with a very very fine grit paper. It is normally done on a sheet of glass, to ensure that the end result is a flat surface.

Only issue is that this will void your warranty.

Your problem could also be the thermal transfer compound. Did you apply your own, or did the cooler come with it pre-applied? If you applied your own (hopefully Arctic Silver, Ceramique or Arctic Cooling MX 1 or 2) then how did you use it? Did you follow the instructions?

A few degrees between cores (2-5c) is normal, any more and there is generally something wrong somewhere.

that sounds gay lol and yea i applied it myself, its not arctic silver, its what ever came with the Asus cooler, i did read up about apply too much and to little, i only did a pee size amount in the centre. but yea t could be the problem becuase on initial installation of the new cooler it did not seat rite and was sat a little wonky. so i had to take it off and do it again. i suppose i could have made an uneven surface by doing so. its not dangerous to leave it for now is it ? untill i get some arctic silver that is.

Cheers

No, if it's a G0 stepping (SLACR) then you are fine temp wise up to about 70c, but I wouldn't like to be running too long at or much over that.

Your issue with uneven temps will no doubt be down to the way you applied the paste, given that you say you used a pea size amount in the middle.

I don't know about the paste you used, but Arctic Silver recommend using a thin line of paste across the chip, see here....

EDIT - make sure you stress test with Prime95 25.4 small FFT's to see what temps your chip is hitting maxed out.

I think getting different temps with a 6600 is fairly normall mine generally are all different - makes sense I guess as the cores will al be under different loads.

Slightly odd thing I've noticed with mine however is that since coming to uni my temps have risen by about 10 degrees.

Think it's because this rooms got no air flow though lol.
