Hi I recently brought a Q6600 along with an asus maxius (please excuss my spelling) motherboard and some corsar domiantor RAM (2X1GB). I noticed that there was a thing called "cpu level up" so after reading bits on here about what to check for I decided to try and overclock my system abit, so I turned it upto the next level (QX6700 I think, 2.66Mhz) I then ran prime95 for 10mins and got the following temps:

CPU 49 °C (120 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #1 63 °C (145 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #2 61 °C (142 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #3 63 °C (145 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #4 63 °C (145 °F)

is this safe, core 1 got to 69 °C at a couple of points but came striaght back down again. Also I know I can't really go any higher than that cause 65 °C is what most people on here seem to say is safe but what can I do to lower the temp abit.

Thanks

Quads are safe up to at least 85C and then either the chip or the mobo will slow things down. My Q6600 runs at a (leisurely for this place) 2.7GHz and the cores are between 65C and 62C when it's at 100%. I could probaly get things down a bit but it's a B3 stepping CPU so it's in the right range.

You haven't said what cooler you're using on the CPU. If, as seems likely, it's the standard one you can take at least 10C off by using a decent one. Cheap but good includes the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and others by Coolermaster and OCZ in a similar style. Better but correspondingly more expensive are the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, Tuniq Tower, Noctua NH-U12F, etc.

I noticed when I used the Asus 'CPU level up' it raised the vcore a fair bit which caused higher temps.

So I set it to manual, left the vcore at stock, raised the FSB to 333 and altered the ram to it's default volts, timing and speed, it was as simple as that.

Is your board the Maximus Formula? If so what bios are you running? (Everest will tell you this). The later ones seem to report higher temps and no one seems sure which is right at the moment.

The temps you are seeing seem fine for the the Intel stock cooler.

Make sure you've updated to the latest BIOS. I have the Maximus Extreme with a Q6600 and since updating, my CPU runs 15deg cooler.

Yes I'm using the standard cooler, got the readings from Everest Ultimate Edition

get your self a good cooler and some arctic silver paste,i got the akasa evo and now ive repositioned my tower for better ventilation i idle at 42 42 42 40 steady and hit about 53c under stress testing so its well worth investing in one...edit..temps according to coretemp.
