Q6600 Temps

Just upgraded my sons machine putting my E6600 in it and putting a Q6600 in mine.

I'm using an arctic freezer 7 pro with MX-1 paste and with the E6600 was getting temps of around 36-40 idle (with the power management on) going to 55ish under full load.

Now I've used the same cooler on my Q6600 but screwed it twice so ran out of MX-1 and used some thermal right stuff. Thing is temps are now 50-46-43-48 again running at 1600 on the power management stuff, haven't got the nerve to load it and TAT doesn't seem to recognise the 4 cores.

Now I know thats not good and probably the Thermalright paste is at fault (although to be honest I struggled to get the cooler on) but after getting my sons machine up and running using the stock cooler his is running at 29-29 (power managed).

So as the stock cooler seems to be better than I've ever had my Freezer7 running where am I going wrong? Should I forget the Freezer7 and use the stock cooler? Or should I buy a different paste and try again? I must admit I'm thinking of heading for the stock, it may even be its simpler installation that has give the better readings.......

any help greatfully received.

Buy some Arctic Silver 5 and stick with the freezer.

I have this setup and I am idle at around 36'C at 3.3Ghz. Just make sure you apply it right and seat the cooler properly. Turn off speedstep.

I would guess the heatsink isnt mounted correctly, those temps seem pretty high! I idle at around 35c on my 24/7 clock of 3.825 with fans barely moving..

would mount the stock heatsink and see what you get.. if they are a lot less then would say you havent mounted the freezer correctly because that should run better than the stock heatsink

as for loading a quad core use Prime95 and read temps using Coretemp

is it just me or is the freezer noisy as hell ?

if i turn the speed down in bios whats the safest speed (percentage) to have it at.

also i have arctic silver but didnt apply it as the freezer as paste on it already. is it worth taking the stock paste off and applying the silver and if so how/safest way of doing it ?

cheers guys

Bumping because im in the same boat (Nearly)

Idles 40-40-37-37

Using the same cooler with the paste that came on it.

My freezer is not noisy and I don't remember whether it had paste on it or not, if it did I took it off because I had the MX and that was supposed to be better. What is noisy is the cooler master cooler I put on in place of the Thermal right HR05 I found I couldn't trust.

I think this is because the cooler master touches the Freezer so I'm going to replace it yet again as I put the HR in my media PC. So I bought a new passive NB cooler with the TIM and paste I just ordered......

The freezer shouldnt be noisey - no noisier than a standard fan. The stuff you get pre-applied is more than sufficient, not worth cleaning it all down for AS5.

Is it usual to have quite a spread of temps over the four cores of a quad?

Having reset my heat sink I now have 42.39.38.35. It would seem logical that windows loads up the first core more as its no great wonder at multi tasking and the same logic works for the last core not being used a lot but 5-7 degrees different over the 4 cores?

Have I screwed this job yet again or is this just normal? It seems to me I still have something wrong if you guys are getting mid 30's overclocked and I'm getting the above with stock settings and with Speedstep on at idle!

Thing is I've done this quite a few times now and still have not got the idle temps down low enough that I feel like risking overclocking....

That said I just stuck my hand in the processor fan and its not running, I've got the fan quiet stuff on so if my fans doing not much its going to be higher than usual. I'm gonna go turn all that stuff off in the bios and see what happens but any advice on the spread of temps still gratefully received....
