EDIT [According to CPU-Z - its an E6600 I have if that makes any difference? - sorry about the thread title]

OK guys - is there a big difference in the processing power of these two CPUs?

Have bought an E8400 2nd hand off the marketplace and, instead of upgrading my dads rig with it, was gonna put it in my own which currently is running a core2duo (2.4GHZ in a P5W DH Deluxe motherboard).

Trouble is I have a water cooled system and can't really be bothered fiddling around with it. Would the performance difference be significant - is it worth my while doing it?

He is currently running an Athlon XP3000 so my C2D will be a huge upgrade for him anyway.

E6600 is dual core, that makes a big difference. You will notice a big difference in performance! Its a spankingly fast cpu that E8400, needs a bit of overclocking too, to make it tremendous. He will see a massive upgrade even with a celeron, so yes your C2D is gonna be a great step up for him :)

It's faster yes....You need to flash the motherboard with the latest bios though before installing the E8400,

I'd definately say stick the E8400 in your system and stick the E6600 in your dads. That way, you both get a good upgrade instead of just one of you.
