Hi all,

Have recently upgraded to Q6600 + P5K Premium. Today I decided to lap the heatsink to get better temps, but alas it doesn't seem to have helped. I am getting temps of 33,33,25,27 on stock everything ie not overclocked. There is good airflow in the case because if I run without the side cover it only makes a difference of 1 deg less. I have tried re seating, and tightening the screws as far as they will go - btw the cpu looked pretty flat when I checked it with a straight steel rule. I realise the AS5 will need to cure, but I feel I should be getting better temps or am I being unrealistic here?

Have a Sharkoon 2000rpm fan blowing through the heatsink plus one fan in front of case drawing in fresh air, two 120 fans in roof extracting, and one 120 fan exhausting at rear of case.

Any thoughts, ideas please would be very helpful.

hard to tell of idle temps, download coretemp and prime95 and load all 4 cores leave it running for 10 mins and post some load temps would give a better indication

I am idling in mid 40's with a tuniq, so if I had your temps I would probably be quite happy. Though as pneumonic says, best to go on load temps.

Hi Pneumonic,

Thanks for the reply - I would do as you suggest but coretemp keeps crashing when I run prime 95, but I will try it by just keep re starting it. Will get back to you.

Hi againg,

Have run 11 minutes of prime 95 small fft, and temps reached 47,47,39,40 in coretemp - how does that reckon with you? Btw I found the program that was causing coretemp to crash - it was spyware doctor, disabling it made the problem go away.

So what do you reckon - maybe the temps are not too bad?

temps look good although I think if you lapped it you would see something like 40/40/38/38... still loads of headroom there for an overclock

Hi Pneumonic,

Thanks for getting back so quick. So you reckon I ought to lap the cpu anyway? I was a bit hessitant to do that as it looks pretty flat, but if I wan,t to o/c then perhaps I should, and finish the job off properly.

Thanks again for your input.

well they are plenty of guides about I suggest you have a good read into it first.. also you can get lapping kits.. do a google search for "heatsink lapping kit premium" should get you something

Would one of these kits be sufficient to lap both the CPU and HS, or should you go for 2 kits?
