What sort of current gen i-series is the equivalent of a Q6600 at 3.4ghz?

(And again at 3.6ghz)

I know its a bit of a weird question to ask OC'ed Vs Stock i-series, but don't want to upgrade to something that wouldn't beat the current CPU at stock.

Thanks :)

For lack of a better answer, I would not upgrade my q6600 @ 3.3 (24/7oc) for anything less than an an i7-920, but a lot depends on the supporting hardware, GPU and 4gb+ of ram being the main thing.

Not a very scientific answer i'm afraid, but I read a lot, and the benefits in games (or lack thereof) are pretty obvious. The Q6600 @3ghz or more still rinses pretty much all games if paired with a high end GPU and 4 gb ram.

Personally, id say the i5 750 can be considered as comparable :/
and also i wouldnt upgrade to be honest. Maybe wait for the next generation CPUs? or maybe even wait for the Intel refresh early next year?

entirely up to you

I'm just gonna keep whacking GPUs onto my CPU till it really is no longer good enough before upgrading. then it'll be noticeable when I do but in the mean time money will go towards graphics where it's needed not five hundred on i7

I've got the upgrade itch my self. My Q6600 is at 3.2GHz (but I run it at stock a lot now too) paired with GTX280 AND 4gb corsair dominator 1066mhz. TBH I've never come against a program or game I have any issues with.

I think a better upgrade would be an ssd rather then a new cpu. Those are worth the money or so I'm told.

Thanks guys, mine is at 3.4 daily as I have a low VID 1.225 or something. Might crank it up to 3.6 instead.

Have 4Gb of 1066 OCZ Reaper so that's all good.
4890 with 2gb of Vram seems to be doing OK, might change this when 6XXX comes out.
Have Corsair SSD M225, which is by far the best upgrade I have ever made :)

Cheers guys, will wait until I am CPU bound I guess, which seems a long time away.

According to a review on Custom PC magazine a few issues ago, the Q6600 overclocked to 3.7GHz is roughly hair-length short of i5 750's speed at stock 2.66GHz.
