I game mainly, and do fair bit of ripping and video editing. It's running at 3GHz and I don't really see it slowing me down anywhere apart from in benchmarks.

So then, a worthy upgrade or not?

Finally, will my Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300C3 be fine still? It runs at 4-4-4-12 2T @ 800MHz all day without issues and can do more but I don't really see the point.

There's also the new AMD chipery on the way. A whole new can of worms to thinks about ;) Whether they're good or not, they'll drive down prices

Absolutely no point at all for gaming. I just moved from a 4300 @3.4ghz to a Q6600 G0 @3.2ghz and there is no difference at all. Complete waste of time and money.

That's what I needed to hear. Thanks mate.

Getting H20 on Saturday anyway so I'll clock the E4300 higher.

Yes but you are forgetting the dvd editing and ripping part of the equation though surely, if your software supports quad core then your times will probably be at least halved .... leaving you more time to game, or even better game and rip at the same time.

There is no point to upgrading to a q6600 at the moment, penryn hits in Jan 2008 45nm 6-12 cores. It would be better to wait until these new intels hit the market.

You have changed it. There was no mention of video editing or ripping before. In that case, as already stated, if your software supports it there will be an improvement.

Last time i reply to a thread without quoting the original text.

Yeah I suppose. The E4300 is a cracking chip but it's letting my system down as a whole.

Also, will the Q6600 work with my P5N-E SLI mobo?

Yep. If it doesn't I'll just buy one that it will work with. No biggie.

EDIT apparently it does, just checked the ASUS website.

What chipset is your motherboard, it may not clock very well. The p35 chipset are meant to be the best at clocking the quads.

I wonder if the p5n-e will work with 8 cores and cpus way down the line or does it stop at penryn basically

1 year of compatibility aint great tbh
