I currently have a heavily overclocked core 2 chip running at 2.9 gig is it worth changing to a Q6600? I mainly use my pc for cubase and games. I have 4 gig ddr2 ram and Vista 64 bit.

I could clock the quad cpu to 3 gig. I have a Radeon 6850.

I have a budget of £250 if any one could recommend something better?!?

My monitor only does 1650x1080.

What would be the point of that? surely a quad core would help play call of duty black ops better. My chip has 1 meg level 2 cache, the quad has eight and a high end dual core has 6.

if you can get a q6600 for £60 on MM then go for it :) Will be a nice improvement and last until you can afford a real upgrade. 6850 is perfect for 1680x1050.

I can't access MM yet as I am way short of the 250 posts needed, I've been on these forums 2 years and clocked up 80 posts or so!

Just upgraded my brothers computer from an E5200 dual clocked at 3ghz to the q6700 clocked at 3ghz and that made a massive difference when playing Black Ops

On the dual core it was stuttering a lot and was quite unbearable to play but with the quad it is silky smooth, so a very decent upgrade without spending too much

same here black ops runs smooth constant 60fps maxed all settings.with a puny gtx260.my son cant play on his dual core setup,to much stuttering.

Black Ops is hit and miss hardware wise - I know people with i7 setups who get insane stuttering and others on dual cores where its relatively smooth (tho still not ideal).

If your motherboard supports it (not all do) I'd go with a Q9550 or similiar 45nm Core 2 Quad rather than the Q6600 tho the Q6600 is still a great chip.

As Rroff says look for a q9550 rather than the q6600 as an upgrade for 775 socket. That said, at around £60 the q6600 is still an amazing chip for the money, especially if you can get a decent overclock out of it. A well clocked q9550 or q6600 paired with a decent gfx card can easily run the latest games with decent fps

2.9Ghz is not a heavy overclock really (my 1.8Ghz e4300 was at 3.2Ghz and that's not that great an overclock for this chip for example) . Get to at least 3.2 and you are starting to get there :-) What's the chip you have now? (so we can guage a rough value and also advice).

£250. Hmm.. if you could sell your current chip/mobo/ram for a little bit that would increase your money, and you could go sandybridge or an older i5/i7 setup for not that much money. DDR3 is VERY cheap at the moment, and probably have change left, to sell the 6850 and get a better gfx card.

Correct, I only have a modest rig but my processor seems to have zero problem playing the latest titles, granted I am fairly fortunate to have a decent Q6600 which clocks considerably well and temperatures remain cool through the Corsair H50.

is black ops even coded for 4 cores? i havent really read much about it, but when i was looking at upgrading my dual core (AMD) most people said that the games dont actually make use of more than 2 cores anyway.

My chip is an E2180.

I thought getting an I3 Sandy chip or a G9650 and getting it to 4 gig.

Just noticed you have a P5Q Pro like me :)

Would you be able to post all your settings for your overclock please? Vcore, cpu vtt, nb, fsb etc. Basically any you haven't left on auto lol.

Im hoping to have a crack at an even higher overclock than my 3.6ghz as temps are no issue with my water setup. Im interested to see how much voltage bumps I would need to jump to 3.8ghz.

That would be pointless really as you would have to upgrade your mobo, cpu and ram. By this point you might as well just go whole hog on an i5 2500k setup :p

The cheapest I can get a Q6600 for is £80 2nd hand from a shop that deals in 2nd hand stock (national chain), there is no guarantee it will be a good Q6600, it might be a poor over clocker. My motherboard is an Asus P5QL but I have a new P5Q SE2 (P45 chipset) laying around doing nothing (brand new won from an auction site at 99p first bid - mis listed).

Anyway, a G9 chip is £70, board to suit £50 and ram £30, mega upgrade for £150 and I can sell my old boards and cpu/ram. A S2500 would cost more, just sticking to a budget.

Mine are all on Auto, lol
My V.I.D is 1.2625v.

I got to the point where anything above 3.85Ghz wanted a good more voltage so stopped there, my happy medium is 3.75Ghz.

iTEK what is your bios vcore for [email protected] if it is 1.44v in the windows? Is 1.44v idle or load voltage? If it is load then your idle will be higher. I have same VID of 1.2625v.

If you have PC2-8500 DDR2 then go fast dual and clock it (4.4Ghz+)
PC2-6400 depends on how capable is your RAM. Mine is rubbish won't let me pass 4Ghz:(
any slower than that go Quad core upgrade.

Generally 4.4Ghz dual will beat 3.6Ghz quad in nearly every game but if you can't overclock that much (your mobo is good so its about RAM) then you wouldn't be able to take advantage of Dual core potential and Quad Core will be faster in not-much-overclocked rig.
