Hi all,

Ive bought a Q6700 OEM cpu from the states for £120 as my cousin is living out there and here is coming to visit soon.

Will I be able to overclock this A LOT more than my Q6600 which is currently at 3.2ghz as it has a 10x multiplier?

Cheers

Daniel

No

However, your q6600 doesn't seem a good clocker since it only hits 3.2Ghz so your q6700 might clock higher.

It'll probably do more than 3.2ghz, but then most Q6600's will do more than 3.2ghz too.

The Q6700's extra multi usually offers no advantage as the 65nm quad-core chips aren't FSB limited.

Well I'm gonna swap it when I get it and see how far I can push it. I just thought the price was decent and thought I maybe able to push it more than the 6600.

I mean if I was able to achieve 400*9 on my Q6600 = 3.6, would it make the Q6700 400*10 = 4Ghz

At the moment I run the multiplier @ 9 and FSB @ 355 = 3195

If I do this on the Q6700 with the multiplier @ 10 and FSB @ 355 wouldn't it be much faster = 3550

??

As cob says, fsb is rarely the limit on a q66xx overclocking (take mine for example running at 475fsb.

Yes 10 x 355 will be quicker than 3.2Ghz but, unless you have already tried and failed, your q6600 has a much chance of running at 9 x 394 = 3550 as well.

The cpu in q6xxx series is usually the limit of your overclock. Some great q6600 chips are capable of 4Ghz, others 3.6-3.8 and 99% will do 3.3 - 3.5Ghz.

Only if the q6700 can handle 4Ghz which it might if your very, very lucky.

Your q6600 might do 4Ghz anyway.

Not quite.

As I said, the extra multi will not let you clock the Q6700 further than the Q6600. The chances of getting a Q6700 to 4ghz are the exact same as the chances of getting a Q6600 to 4ghz (ie - virtually nil because they are the exact same chip, and a stable 4ghz quad-core is very hard to come by).

It just sounds like your Q6600 is a bad clocker, and swapping it for another chip is a sensible idea. Usually swapping it for another Q6600 would do the trick, but I see the sense of getting a Q6700 if it's only going to cost you £120. But does not have a better chance of being a good clocker than another Q6600.

You've not looked into this properly, have you?

lol - Obviously not :)

I just thought with the 10x multy and a cheap enough chip, I thought it could be pushed further.

Anyway, once I get it, I'll keep you guys updated and see how far I can push it.

No harm done though especially at the price you got it for. It may well be a better clocker than you have already and if not then you will certainly get your money back on it.
