q6700 vs i5 for gaming

gotta a new build coming up next month (first pay check ever muahaha)

amongst a new GPU (GTX470), 700D case and watercooling, I am in two minds about a whole new mobo, ram and cpu setup

i5 I hear is great for gaming and I don't need i7 for encoding etc

I put together what I thought is a respectable i5 combo for £380 on ocuk

what are your thoughts on my spec in sig vs a 4.0ghz i5 setup?

am I gonna NEED it to unleash the GTX470?

or am I gonna notice only 5fps but have paid through the roof for it?!

only benefit to i5 is I want to try sli one day:)

cheers

It will be a bit faster as i went from a Q6600 to an i7 860 and although it is a bit faster i don't think it was worth it but it depends on what your expectations are

I'd go i5 simplay as its new tech, and it can only be better :)

I went Q6600 to i7, and I can see improvements by far :)

As i said it depends on what you are looking for but the most noticeable upgrade for me was a Ssd boot drive , new cpus are coming soon and i would wait to see what they offer

well maybe instead I keep my mobo and cpu and get a GTX480 instead, when are the new CPUs due out I thought Q1-Q2 2011?!

i5 is the best gaming cpu available iirc, beating even the i7 in some cases. So yes I would grab one personally. You could wait for Intel's new processors to be released, but it depends if you're that patient. :p

yeh I think my system will last me till the new tech comes out and the performance difference is more noticeable.

I always think more GPU is the way to go when running any modern proc above 3.5ghz

It's a shame though, i've wanted to hit 4ghz from the P4 days to now (6yrs lol)

Something about that number is magical

i see 5Ghz as the magic number ;)

Id go sli for better game performance. & still use the old quad.
I think ram speed will be a factor soon, especially as crysis2 likes 6gig, though id stil go sli.

Juno my kobo won't do sli, and don't want to invest anymore mobo-wise into the 775 platform.
I had been wondering about ram speed however, it's a shame he days of dirt cheap DDR2 are over:(
Si soft said my ram was poo lol!
Will crysis 2 (also on consoles) really need 6gig?! Thought even vey few pro-level apps can assign more than 3gb of memory?

My mobo wont do sli either :(

I just heard crysis2 needed 6gig.

Ive just started using w7-64bit to use all my 4gig & get everything running ok as video codecs are difficult to sort.

Tried crysis1 64bit version & didnt notice it being faster.

Ive noticed 64bit uses more memory.
Eg. playing starcraft2 i noticed 3gig was used just in the lobby, tho bbchd was playing on the other tv. heh heh.

keep ur quad mate if all ur doing is gaming,i went from a 3.6ghz watercooled q6660 to i7930 4.0ghz and hardly seen any diffrence for the £2000 that i spent, wish i had jst bought a new mobo as my old 1 was crap at oc,upgrade ur gtx and get 2x64gb crucial c-300 and raid 0 them for 550/250 read&write then start saving for sandybridge.........
