Q8400 overclocking

It's a case where you'll have to give it a go and see.

I was able to achieve 3.7 (watercooled) with an E5300 on an asus g31 board, while it did 4.2ghz on a p5q-e. My q6600 maxed out at 3.1 on the g31 and could hit 3.6 (just, not a great ocer) on the p5q-e. The problem is power, lack of phases leading to not enough plus unstable power delivery when pushed hard (I have a similar prob with my current board). They also tend to have limited bios options which doesnt help.

I had 3.6 stable on Asus Striker II Extreme.
I don't know anything about G31, but P31 was poor for overclocking.. so probably your 3.03 is max you can have on it.

ive not had a slight upgraded now....
asrock g41m-gs3 motherboard and 4 gb kingston hyper x red 1600mhz

do you think ill much improvment now?

AsRock webpage says:
Supports Dual Channel DDR3 1333(OC)
So it means you have to do o/c, otherwise Auto setting will always set memory up to 1066 MHz.

Regarding to improvements over G31:
Supports FSB1333/1066/800/533 MHz
.. which gives you rather poor chance to achieve higher FSB speed. You can only try yourself :)

soo a waste of money then ?

I had my q8400 at 3.1 on asrock g31m

Ran too hot for anything higher, just upgraded to an i5 3570k and happy enough.

Generally for overclocking Core2duo CPUs, the 31 and 41 chipset boards ain't too bad, but they are definitely no good for overclocking Core2Quad CPUs. As a thumb of rules, generally you should have a P35 or P45 chipset board if you want to get a decent overclock on a Core2Quad..

With that said, since the Q8xxx Core2Quad are locked with a x7 multiplier, realistically you would expect it to go much further than 3.2GHz even on the good boards, and for 31 or 41 chipset boards, I think the realistic target is 3.0GHz and that's it.

Mate, if you want to o/c - best chipset for s775 is P35/X38/P45/X48/nForce 790i. Q8400 is not great overclocker BTW, a bit better is Q9400 which is coolest chip I've ever had, if you mind temps.

very true however it has a x's 8 multiplyer, not that it is making much difference as bios wants it to stay at x 6 :S

wierd thing is the old board i used i could overclock to 3.20 easy and more if i had a better heatsink/cooler

also i should add there is a hell of a lot more setting ive never seen as this is probably the newest board ive owned so i dont know what half them mean

as people have told you the g31/g41 boards don't offer v-core options as otherwise people would have tried to up the v-core of their quads and the power mosfet circuitry isn't man enough to cope with an overvolted quad so boards would have failed .So whatever the vid is thats it. With a core 2 duo like say a wolfdale e5400 they are usually good for 3.3/3.6ghz at 1.25v. I use one on my housemates asrock g31.

But You should have done some research to getting a decent board than rushing to get the same thing again.

Theres vid pinmod options, but Its not a good idea at all with quad 775 for reasons above.
I had to do that to get a e5300 using a 333fsb bsel mod but luckily the foxconn 45cmx had v-core options and was only a duo.

So search for a better board, or upgrade to a better cpu architecture.
