i will be upgrading my mobo to Asus P5Q Deluxe Intel P45 and strapping on an h70 next weekend so im doing some Research.

i know its old tech but usuall story im doing this on a budget and i also hear intel are going to be releasing a new chip soon so i will be biding my time till then.

i have seen vids on youtube and read lots on oc'ing this chip and mobo, i dont want warp five i only wish to oc to about 3.2 or 3.4 pos 3.6.

i understand that i will need to up the volts for 3.6 ( if my chip can take it ) but can some one give me a starting ref for my chip?

i have read the faq in this section of the forum but i was wondering if anyone has any experiance with this chip and oc'ing it.

many thanks in advance

Hey Buzz,

so you have an Intel® Core™2 Quad Q9400
  • 2664MHz (8x333)
What motherboard do you currently have? . . . also what memory do you currently have and what is its rated speed? . . . if its DDR2-800 that can't run faster than 400MHz (DDR2-800) then your not going to be able to clock that chip much past 3.2GHz
  • 3200MHz (8x400)
An ASUS P5Q-Deluxe and a Corsair Hydro H70 will cost you £183.39 delivered . . . I'm not sure why you would want to spend this amount of money?

May I ask, what is the make and model number of your current motherboard and RAM?

The reason I ask is that 3.2-3.6 GHz should not be an awfully tough overclock for your CPU. Also, only a certain number of s775 boards (mainly the newer ones) support 45nm quad cores (such as your Q9400) - so the board you currently have may be sufficient to overclock the CPU about as far as you are wanting.

Hey buzzlightweight :)

I have 6 gigs of ram.
You haven't answered this question? . . . what I am asking is what is the rated speed of the memory not the size? . . . is it DDR2-666? . . . DDR2-800? :D

You also haven't answered this question:

I appologise, I will be home tomorrow and will double check as not 100% sure.

Thankyou for taking the time to answer so far.

My mobo is a stock Dell which is why I am changing it to an asus p45.

my pc started life as a dll but now the only stock item is the mobo which as stated i will be replacing this thurday with the asus p45 deluxe from ocuk.

my rig set up is: -
corsair 650 psu
6gb ddr2 800
antec 1200 tower
ati 5870
2tb 64mb hdd
win 7
and titan fernrit evo cpu cooler ( took your advice on previous thread )

i hope this clears up some questions

many thanks

hi big wayne i was just wondering if you had an answer for me? i understand you saying i might not be able to get much past 3.2, but 3.2 as i said in the beginning would be great.

many thanks

Hello buzzlightweight :)

there really isn't much to it . . . you just need to change the FSB from 333MHz to 400MHz . . . your memory won't let you go any higher unless it can overclock? . . . the CPU may make that clock on [Auto] or you may have to manually boost the vCore . . . seems a pity to buy a new board and be stuck at 3.2GHz . . . You didn't really need a powerful cooler for this clock either . . .

So if I upgrade my memory I can increase the oc? Thanks for the advice, I appreciate your concern, I hear a new range of processors are going to be released in the near future so I will upgrade my mobo and CPU properly then.

:-)

Yes if you have faster memory you can overclock more . . . but what a pain to be buying a new Intel® LGA775 mobo and DDR2-1066 ram? . . . . I don't think this is ideal?

Do you just like spending money? :D

the main reason for the new bored is that the sata connections on my stock dell are four inches in the way of my 5870 gpu which i cannot use as it is 11" long, also there is no option to oc my chip in the dell bios.

i have completely changed all the stock componants on my dell, the only original parts are the mobo which i know is of the lowest quality ( although i paid a high price for the pc! ) and the chip, so untill i am in a postion to buy the high end bored, chip and memory i soooooooo desire i will have to make do.

the reason for upgrading my cooler btw is because when i was playing games my temps were hitting 75+ so as in my other post i took your advice and didnt get the noctua i got the titan fernrir evo, smaller!!!! and half the price.

i really appreciate all your help and guidence ;-)
