just done an update of mobo and cpu and the cpu temp is showing as 45 degrees is this normalish for a quad core?

That's too high for a 45nm quad under a Tuniq Tower. Have you updated the BIOS yet?

erm i just installed it and then went into bios and looked at the system monitor i think

Ive got a Q9450 running at 3.3 and my idle temps under a TRUE with the latest coretemp is 48c,a few friends have the same cpu and i dont think any of us have had under 40c at idle at stock.

Mine runs at 47c idle @ 3.5ghz; it's under water and has been lapped. Methinks they're quite toasty CPUs.

Have you tried running the latest core temp?. Don't worry about idle temps and see what your load temps are first they are what really matter.

That's a great idea, my temps dropped about 5-10c with the latest CoreTemp.

At stock with a TT120 mine is at 25 idle and 35-37 load oc'd to 3.2 i get idle at 38 and load of 50-55.

yeah... that's why i suggested to use it. The latest core temp gives the correct Tj.max which is 100 for 45nm. It always used to be 105.
