I'm not suggesting the OP does this, but it isn't specifically necessary to apply thermal paste. I had a single core Athlon system a couple of years ago that didn't got over 50C even without thermal paste. Adding paste 'only' reduced temps by about 5C so the IHS must have been pretty flat and there was obviously enough pressure to make a reasonable contact.
All in all, you'd be stupid not to use paste, but depending on the CPU it might not be the end of the world if you cant.
