After trying 2 different motherboards and 2 different heat sinks the temperature readings on the first 2 cores are about 58 degrees where as cores 2 & 3 are running at about 38 degrees.

Is this normal?

Hello and welcome.
Claimed.

there's always a difference, a large difference is caused by the base of your heatsink, and the cpu heatspreader not being flat, so there isn't a perfect contact.

You can fix this by lapping :)

hmm no definatley not, if you have tried 2 different HSF's and 2 mobo's could be just a bad cpu. Unless on both occasions you have seated the HSF incorrectly or not applied an even spread of coolant.

ben beat me to it :(

lol i wouldn't image that big a difference in temp just from not having the HSF lapped ? ;/

Thanks for your quick responses :)

At first I thought it could be this but after trying 2 completely different heat sinks which I am positive was having perfect contact with the CPU, I am not sure.

A 20 degree difference between die's is quite a lot. I did contact Intel about this and they agreed that it was too hot so I think I will have to return it :(

some of the older chips had temperature problems, i remeber the E8400 being the same, the only thing to worry about is at load tbh. Run prime 95 or intel burn software to see how hot they become underload.

As long as the temps are similar under load u have nothing to worry about

Regardless of load temps if I had that big a difference at idle I would look into returning the chip.

I have e8400 at 3.825ghz and one core reads 38c, the other reads 55c. Both load at roughly the same temps btw. It appears to have no detrimental effect on the pc and its been sitting in me pc with that temp difference for months now.
