Currently have my q9550 with a single 4870 1gb graphics card, but just wondered if i were to replace my graphics card in say a years time what are the chances of the q9550 being a bottleneck? I know technology moves fast so would just like to know your input from past experience :) btw the q9550 isn't oc'ed and don't really plan to.

It doesn't move *that* fast! :D

You have a brilliant processsor that puts you in the very highest *global* % of uBer hardware.

If a game developer releases a game that doesn't play perfectly on a Q9550 Yorkfield then about 95% of the World won't be able to play the game!

Haha, this statement has made my day, as I purchased one of these yesterday. Wished I'd realised yesterday was a bloody Friday though!

You can probably safely overclock to 3.2 on stock cooling. Hell, I'm running my E2160 (stock 1.8) at 2.4, and I'm going to try pushing it to 3.0 when I get my new RAM on Monday, with stock cooling. :)

Did you buy it from OCUK? If you did, (When it arrives and you install it) can you let me know if its the E0 Stepping chip?

I've seen this chips price drop from around £220 to £175 over the last couple of weeks and I reckon now is the time to buy. It'll go nicely with an ASUS P5Q Deluxe I have sitting unopened in its box. ;)

Id say itll more than likely be an EO stepping, got one from ocuk a few weeks ago, EO currently running at 3.4ghz on stock volts in a p5q deluxe.

I did, I'll post back tomorrow. :)

The P5Q Deluxe is a much nicer board than the board I'm using :(

Look forward to you posting the results. :)

I'm using a Gigabyte DS3 and a Core 2 Duo E6600 and I'm relatively happy with its performance even after nearly 2 years - But I got the ASUS board from a guy who I used to work with (Leaving present) and its been sitting idle for a few months now. Figured I may as well upgrade for the price it will cost me.

£175 isn't a bad price to pay for a CPU and Board upgrade.

I got it today, it's an E0. :)

Of course, I seem to have done something wrong, as I can make it hit 70oC :|. Well, the Arctic site did say it can take a few days to "break in", so I'll see what happens. :)

andrewdodd13,

70c under load at either standard or with a mild overclock is too hot imo.

Is it load or, even worse, idle - If it's the latter get it switched off and sorted !!

What cpu cooler you got? Case cooling?

It's standard. Idle, I usually get 35 or so degrees. Firefox + Flash gives 40-42, etc. It's OCCT Linpack that can push it to 70. :)

I've changed the thermal paste three times now (I'm probably crap at it, but I wouldn't expect it to make a massive difference) and there's been very little difference. I'm using the stock Intel HSF (which I know is probably crap, any recommendations?) and the 120mm fans that come with the Coolermaster 335 case.

Id reccomend either of theese coolers.

Titan fenrir

Sunbeam core contact
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-000-TQ&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

Theese are both highly rated coolers that will be a vast improvement over the stock hsf.
Cheers, I quite like the look of the Fenrir. The Sunbeam one being on its side makes me feel funny inside. :P

What worries me the most is that when idle the CPU is so cool. According to Core Temp, the lowest has been 33/28/28/31 over the four cores.

Is it possible I have a broken sensor?

(Also, sorry for derailing this thread... :))

Both are great coolers and pretty similar in design, regarding the temps, this is common on quads, mine idles at 31-31-27-27, was the same on my previous q6600, even after lapping it.

Am running the Titan Fenrir myself although was considering the Sunbeam until I realised it was Push pin fitting which I DO NOT like. Then again had to remove board to fit backplate for the fenrir - prefer the latter myself.

Running CO stepping Q9550 @3.4 slightly undervolted.

Temps are 37-36-34-32 as I type - Under load (prime)Approx. 51-49-49-47. Am Running Titan Fan with limiter on to slow it down and keep it quiet and believe it could cool a lot further if I ran the fan at top speed.

Have heard that linpack does stretch cpu's even further so will give it a go and report temps.

Linpack is ridiculously harsh, in fact I believe that's why OCCT offers it as an alternative to its own one -- which also gives high temps for me.

Once BOINC noticed I'd upgraded from 2 to 4 cores it started pumping out 100% CPU usage all the time, not good. :)

So I'll probably order the Fenrir on Thursday (pay day, I kinda stretched my budget this month to cover the Q9550 and some RAM). Money money money :(

Ran OCCT for 10 mins - got bored, am tired, work tommorrow etc

Temps @ top 52 50 50 47 - so not much difference as compared to prime. Maybe if I ran it (or Prime for that matter) for 12hrs might get much higher temps but as I do not run heavy cpu programs (games are most taxing work my computer deals with) such is probably irrelavent for my usage.

Btw its all fitted inside a Haf case- which probably keeps temps down ; although was running a Tuniq Tower before the Titan in an old Stacker case and temps were no more than 3c more.

Didn't realise until after ^^^ that Lipack is another test :o- will have a play tommorrow.
