Hello

I have just finished building my PC and was hoping for some adivce about OC my CPU. I'm a beginner when it comes to OC and would like for anyone who has experience with the q9550 to tell me how far they OC it and how far until it becomes unstable. I'm really not sure what FBS, multiplier or Voltages to use. My specs are as followed:

Q9550 2,8ghz
EVGA 780i F T W
BFG GTX 280 OC
OCZ DDR2 Reaper 2x2g 1066mhz
Nvidia Stacker 830
5 x120 mm fans
2 x 80mm
Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

Will i be able to get to a stable 3.6ghz with this set up? I don't want to go crazy and try to overclock it so it goes up in flames but an idea of what i can achieve will be good :)

Thanks for your help once again

I have no experience with your motherboard but am using the same cpu.

Am using an Asus P5K Premium board .

Am not sure what my Cpu will do and decided it was best to take it slow(ish).

Ran it for a few days at stock & got to know running temps(realtemp) & voltage(cpu-z).

Then leaving all auto except 1) FSB - increased to 400 & 2) Ram - fixed @ddr2 1066 - let the board run.

Now running at 3.4 (which I had been confident the board/cpu would do).

Checked cpu Temps & voltage and noticed that the voltage had been increased by the board (auto setting) to 1.2+ volts.
Felt this volt was a bit high , although temps were still o'k , so decided to manually set the cpu volts at 1.165v.
Failed prime at this voltage so increased it to 1.1875v - nice & stable .

Have been running for a few days now @3.4 - stable and cool.

May well have a go to increase to 3.6 or higher in future but for now am happy.

In any event do not think that increasing from 3.4 to 3.6 is going to give me that much more anyway. Any increased performance might well be offset by higher volts and temps.

I have no idea how easy it is to clock your board - if it's similar to mine it will be a very pleasant (easy) procedure. Good Luck :)

The Q9550 will do 3.6Ghz easy , mine will do 4Ghz no problem on my Asus Rampage Formula board (X48 Chipset).:D

Not much experience on the 780i chipset, used the 680i and that was pants for overclocking.

Just try changing your fsb to 450 and multiplier to x8 and see how you go, you should be able to get 3.6Ghz ok i would think , you may need to alter the voltages to ram , nb and cpu core i would think to get it stable.;)

Hopefully someone with the same board could give you some guidelines on voltages. ;)

ugh I was going to overclock last night on my q9550 but with my DFI X48 bios doesnt seem to have vcore option anywhere, I have every option under the sun apart from the bloody one I really need.
