Hello,

I’m currently trying to Overclock my new Q9550 (Spec. in sug.), I have it at 3.4 (400 x 8.5) at ~1.2v. I’m happy enough with this overclock but Prime95 is not stable, 1 core fails after a couple of min’s, the other 3 cores are fine. I’m unsure why one fails? The PC has never BSOD’d and runs Crysis etc extremely well, should I be worried? I guess I should pump a few more volts through the CPU but am unsure, anyone help?

Also, I’ve tried with speedstep enabled and disabled in the BIOS (makes no difference) is a big no-no to overclock and have speedstep enabled?

Cheers

1.2v not gona cut it m8, try 1.25

and btw nothing to worry about, these things happen, its just a sign of the CPU not getting enough volts.

and yea disable speedstep!

Steepstep varies from person to person. I find I dont have any instability with it enabled. No point for me having a 3.6ghz monster for when I'm just playing solitaire or browsing the net, plus cheaper bills :p

Some do say it can cause a crash with the voltage jumping around, I suggest you turn it off till you get stable, then try enabling it. If it goes unstable again, you'll know why

with out trying to hyjack this thread, could you tell me how to turn this off in ASUS board? looked everywhere but cant find it

in AI tweak just scroll down to the very bottom of the list and its 3/4th from the bottom.

Nice, saved me a job :p

It took me a lot of stress to find speedstep on my board, for some reason AMI put it in a hidden menu I have to press f4 to unlock it :S though good to hear yours doesnt have anything like that.

ok now i think im going mad, the bottom six options are: Excuse the spelling:eek:

Load Line Caliberation
CPU Spread Spectrum
PCIe Spread Spectrum
CPU Clock Skew
NB Clock Skew
CPU Margin Enchancement

dont think its any of them?

hmmm then the delux is diff than the pro, unless its just a bios version diff. Try flashing to a newer version. And btw C1E Support is the full name of what you are looking for.

Its because its essentially 2 cpu's (or 4 cores) in one package, and the weak one is giving up first.

What is the rated VID of your chip? You can find this using realtemp (or is it core temp?) if you don't already know it. If its failing at a level below that its fairly normal, as the batch has been tested to be stable at its rated VID.

My Q9550 has a reported vid of 1.225. I can run it stably at 3.4 (400x8.5) at a fraction below (a couple of steps in the voltage selection on my m/b) but anything higher and I need to start adding more volts, as core 1 fails prime very quickly (although the other cores seem fine).

If you haven't tried it already, check the voltage against the chips rated VID and if its lower set it to that. If that doesn't sort the problem out you may have to start over volting the chip a bit. My retail box says "Max 1.25v" on the box so theres a bit of headroom before you even get to intel's recommended max. :D

max recommended vcore by intel is 1.368 on the q9550 c1

Thanks for all the help, I'll have a look at the above when i get home. i think the CPU Voltage is on Auto at the moment se i'll set it a little higher (keeping an eye on Temps) and try Prime again.
