q9550 temperature issues w/ stock cooler

Hi all

ive been having trouble with the temperatures with my q9550 on a dfi lt t2r - all at stock settings, not overclocked. im using the stock cooler (in an antec p182). i have also had some packaging/heatsink trouble with the motherboard, but that will be addressed in another thread.

at ambient room temp of 20c the processor idles at around 45c (at stock!) and when put under load with prime95 ive seen it go over 80c (and over 70c in some games i.e dirt). ive been using ite smart guardian, real temp, speedfan and cpuid hw monitor to measure the temps (one at a time), as i cant seem to get any reliable info (ie they all report different results - including the bios).

80c for tcase under load is very concerning - while i was performing these tests i had cpu-z open which confirmed that the cpu's thermtrip protection came into effect as the multiplier went down to the lowest value of 6x - this situation shouldnt happen! i dont not wish to shorten the lifespan of this cpu.

i have checked and confirmed that the heatsink is correctly mounted and that contact is even.

tcase for some reason is about 10c higher than the various core temps - though ive heard this inversion of values is due to PECI not being supported/disabled by the mobo.

can anyone else who has the same configuration post their findings - does your rig run this hot? could the integrated heat spreader in the cpu be damaged? have i got a defective cpu?

cheers
fusi

hi mda96bjh - the stuff that was on the bottom of the stock cooler - three strips, pre-applied

one thing to note though - look at the fan rpm in that pic - makes me not trust ite smart guardian tbh - ive also noticed the reported voltages swing around wildly- quite worrying tbh - so i wrnt into the bios but they were solid there - im using an enermax 850w galaxy psu

It all sounds pretty much normal for stock cooler with stock thermal compound, although high the temps are not dangerous to the CPU unless you plan to run prime torture tests on it for a long period anyway.

Bottom line is that if you want lower temps you're going to have to splash out on a better cooler and some AS5 or similar BUT as things stand it's fine your only problem is if you intend to o/c the cpu you don't have much room heat wise.

Have done 2 Q9550 rigs and at stock with cooler as well, temps never passed 65C with P95, read with realtemp. Have you reaseated the sink? if you did, did you reapply some TIM?, reseating it could have destroyed the standard Intel one and if you did'nt clean off and reapply some goop it'll be high.

i realise this should really of been posted in the cooling board

i didnt reapply any TIM no though it really was like 30 mins after putting it on in the first place that i made sure it was on by reseating it - kinda figured such a short time between putting it on and taking it off wasnt going to affect it so badly - oh well!

ill look into buying an aftermarket cooler and see if that helps - gotta find one that fits my board though, its got a fairly large HS on the NB - thanks for the help and advice guys

if you orientate it right you can get a scythe andy samurai to fit.
heat pipes facing away from the northbridge cooler.
