Q9550 Temps + Overclocking

I have just upgraded my E6600 to a Q9550. I have a ThermalTake Big typhoon VX cooler mounted on it, but the temps seem a bit high to me. I have taken this on and off and applied thermal compound in numerous different ways. But it doesnt make that much difference.

Here are the temps -

Anyway of reducing the temps? Im planning on doing some overclocking, is this wise?

You should be able to get a pretty decent overclock out of vcore 1.2v~

I achieved my 3.8GHz on my VID (1.25v) but had to bump the voltage for stability, I think you should be able to get 3.4GHz on your current cooling and probably more.

Idle temps do look a tad high, but IDLE temps mean nothing, its all about the load temps.

This reminds me need to change my sig :o

Thanks iNPUt, I will have a go then, if you think that's ok. The picture above does show my cpu under load at stock too. I don't know if that makes any difference though?

Must be a bug with coretemp, the load screenshot is showing your cpu at 46698 mhz, should be 2.83ghz, whats the airflow like in your case, for reference i had a 1.200 vid EO stepping q9550, at 3.8ghz 1.216 vcore, load temps were hitting 56-54-46-46, though i think i had stuck sensors on cores 2 + 3.

lol yes I noticed that after I posted, I thought wtf is going on there?! I have an NZXT Lexa case, which has a fan top and bottom a large rear fan, and a large side fan. Plus the big Thermaltake fan on top of the CPU, so cooling should be ok.

My eo stepping q9550 has a VID of 1.3!, but overclocks to 3.6 at 1.275. Tops out at 60 degrees with a basic freezer pro cooling it (taken off my dual core, best £18 i've spent). Plus air flow in case is rubbish (tempted to get a HAF 922)

You should get plenty out of that chip with any serious heat issues.

Here's mine

Just Tried reducing the NB Voltage on my 3.4Ghz overclock, and it wasn't happy at all, wouldn't even boot. So I'm gonna leave that as is, what else can I do to take to 3.6GHz and beyond?

I did try 3.6Ghz, but I ran OCCT and it reported an error on Core 0. The temps reached high 60's.

Do I need to increase the cpu vcore?

Thanks sturmtruppe, but you have a Xeon X3360, and I have a Q9550. So they are different, and I would like to know some BIOS settings, and voltages to change, to get it to go higher than 3.4Ghz. Thanks.

For one thing, you filled up your RAM slot with 4 stick which may require higher voltage to your northbridge. Anyway post a scrennie of your bios template and maybe the OC Guru's here would be able to assist you in some way or another. Also post a scrennie of CPUID with CPU tab, Memory tab and SPD tab.

It's the same chip just the server version. I'd also like to know what vtt/mch etc people are using for their clocks as I'm going to start clocking mine this week at long last.

Sorry I wasn't aware of this, there so many different types of chip, It can easily get confusing! lol

Here are the screenshots, the BIOS screenshots are shown earlier in this post, or is there something else within the bios I need to take a pic of?
