Hello,

Just done a system overhaul to a Q9550 and I'm Priming my new chip as we speak.

I'm using a Freezer 7 and a pair of Noctua 120m fans in an Akasa Eclipse.

Current temps @3.2Ghz (stock volts) are hitting 60 degrees after 30 mins of prime.

I'm not overly concerned becuase this is nowhere near the CPU usage I will me using for extended periods, idle temps are around the 40 mark.

How normal is this?

I am using the MSI core centre atm because MBM doesn't seem to work on this mob (P45 Neo 3) although it does kind of match the bios reading for idle temps.

How reliable are speedfan temps?

my idle at 4ghz is 26ish (cpu not cores) the cores are around 32ish at a guess (two stick sensors dont see below 35)

60 load is fine

looks reasonable for idle, just check the load temps using coretemp/realtemp you shouldnt get more than 50 degrees on load i would think.

my Q9550 E0 stepping is @ 3.6Ghz low 20's idle and 40c under prime torture test, using a zalman and the thermal compound it came with.

Yep TJmax is 100, cores are as follows:

I am in quite a warm room though so It seems ok. Is speedstep the setting in the bios to adjust cpu fan speed? If it is then yes it's working fine, it's just kicked in a bit and brought temps down a few notches.

edit-Just read up on speedstep, I've never trusted anything that changes the speed of the cpu without my say so :) Does it work well?

speedstep is intels power saving feature which lowers voltages (therefore temperature as well) and cpu speed when your idling so it saves you money in the long run :)

Seems I made a schoolboy error, unlike my old board CPU VID set to auto left it at stock volts, with this board it raises the vcore as you up the FSB. It's now sitting at lower temps as yesterday by a good 2 degrees

The main difference being that it's now at 3.4Ghz with stock volts and my FSB is 1600 with my RAM running at it's rated speed. Priming as we speak.

A nice neat overclock for someone who's a bit OCD when it come to nice neat numbers :D

Sweetloaf, I've got mine at 3.4 too. What vcore are you getting in cpuz under load? I'm running around 1.2v

Thanks.

Temps are fine. There was sotware made by intel that pushed all the cores to the max, and generated max temperature. I am sorry but i cannot remember the name now. However orthos or similar will be ok. 60s is now issue however.

Mine is set to 1.25v

CPU-Z reading fluctuates between 1.208v and 1.224v

Dropped the Vcore from 1.2550 to 1.2450 in bios, the next setting down is auto then 1.200 iirc, windows didn't start at 1.200 but is currently into 30mins of prime and has lost about 1 degree from the temps above.

EIST is enabled in the bios, is this the Intel Cool and quiet thingy (Sppedstep) or is that a Windows based app?

edit - nevermind..I just did my own homework :D

Just experimented with Speedstep. Sure enough It dropped the CPU speed to 2.4Ghz, very nice, however upon opening up Cubase it remained at 2.4Ghz. I opened a recently recorded audio track and got a bit of crackle in the audio.

I tried again with Speedstep off and all was fine.

Cheers for the heads up but I'll give it a miss I reckon. :)

I'll use the off button if my CPU is going to be idle for any great length of time.
