Q9550 temps

HI All,

I's just received a Q9550 (C1), to replace my E8400 (EO).

I've got it up to 3.4GHz on a 400 FSB, and looks like it's pretty stable with a Core Voltage of 1.28 under load (hits about 1.3v at idle). I could probably play a bit more to help the temps).

Now, it's a hot day, and my room is a bit warmish, but the temps I'm getting are:

Core 0 - 72 C
Core 1 - 66 C
Core 2 - 71 C
Core 3 - 69 C

Under Prime (FFT) using my arctic freezer pro 7 and arctic silver 5

Are these a bit on the toasty side - it appears idea is around 40 -50...

I'm used to the E8400 (even at 3.6GHz) hitting low 60's tops.

Any thoughts welcome...

Cheers,

Rich

Cheers for the reassurance! Good to hear that they're not abnormal temps - just a bit of a shock coming from a nice cool over clock.

I looked up on the arctic silver website, and they recommended a horizontal line across the heat spreader. I did forget to do the 'wiggle' when putting the fan on the chip.

I might look to replace the FP7 - what would be a good replacement (that's not unbearably loud...!)

Cheers

Rich

PS. Hit 75 on one core during IBT test - though only on one core. Is it usual to have a mixture of temps (ie 68-71-66-72) - wasnt sure if that meant I hadn't put the paste on evenly...

Cheers - I'll definitely have a good tinker to see what I can do.

What cooler would be more suitable for more 'aggressive' overclocking?

The one's that spring to mind are the H50 (not entirely convinced but those as it seems most people replace the supplied fan - seems a bit rich after spending £60 odd...).

Cheers,

Rich

The akasa looks interesting, and a decent price point. I noticed the bottom has the exposed heat pipes - how does that work with thermal paste? Do you just treat it as normal?

Wow - seems a bit more involved than I'm used to!

Still, if it gets good results, it's got to be worth it.

Just put my order in - have a fair amount of Arctic Silver so should be okay...

Thanks - lots of good info there.

I've tried keeping more of a handle on the volts by adjusting manually in bios - there seems to be a afir bit of vdroop (I think that's what it's called: where you might set 1.3v in the bios, but the CPUz only registers 1.28 or something like that).

At the moment the cpu voltage is set as auto (not too keen on that) but it's the only way it's staying stable at 3.4Ghz (CPUz is registering 1.31v at idle, and 1.285v under load) - otherwise it's failing after 4 runs on IBT.

I set the voltage manually in the bios at 1.325, but was resulting in 1.28v in cpuz when idle. I'm thinking that if I set it at something like 1.35, then that might mean it hits 1.3v in real terms. Then I can tweak and get it lower and stable. Sound reasonable?

Plus, I've the new cooler on the way - so should hopefully get the temps down a bit..

I've seen some people mention LinX - is this any different to IBT?

Cheers,

Rich

Wow - looks like a beast of a cooler! No wonder your temps are nice and low (coupled with a nice low voltage). I had been keeping an eye on your thread. Looks like you've a nice chip to play with there.

I'm pretty much stuck at 3.4 with the board I've got (there seems to be a FSB wall at 415+, so I'm happy if I can get it stable and relatively cool at 3.4). I ti9nki that should do me for the foreseeable - I'll look into what new stuff is available in the next 6 months or so, and will hopefully be able to sell the quad and 775 stuff...

Just a quick thought - I've setting to adjust CPU termination, CPU PLL and CPU Ref voltages - will these help at all? (currently all on auto...)

Cheers,

Rich

I'm not banking on that making a huge difference. My new cooler has arrived, but I didn't get the chance to fit it over the weekend - should be able to have a play tonight though.

I've got the chip stable at 3.5Ghz with the bios set at 1.35v, but is around 1.28 to 1.3 actual reading through CPU-Z. The temps haven't changed that much; still topping out at 75c after 20 runs of IBT on high.

I'm hoping the new cooler will make a bit of a difference - Peak temperatures I'm not too worried about - the idle just seems a bit high to me at 50c.

Cheers,

Rich

mmmm perhaps if your lucky the max of 5C difference, most of the time 2-3 degrees not enough to plan future overclocking on
