Looking to upgrade to quad from an [email protected], been reading and it seems to be a waste of cash to buy a new q6600 now as its the end also the q9550 being 45nm less heat/power.

Didn't see many reviews on the ocuk page so is it a good buy?

Also what kind of speeds with a p35c_ds3r/4gb of ocz 800mhz.

cheers.

I would have to say the Q9550 is the best CPU you mentioned. But right now they seem to be very steep in price.
I already have mine but now that the I7 is out , I am not sure i would go and pay the same amount £240+ for something thats not the newest technology. When you can buy and I7 for the same price.

If your just looking for something to get you by then the Q6600 are running reasonably cheap. Or even a 45nm Q9300 what is similar. I am just thinking of what i would be personally thinking in this scenario.

They will all work very well with your P35 setup. Just not cost as much as a Q9550 would. But again the best CPU is the Q9550.

Good luck in your search.

Thats a little better.

I paid about £195 with delivery when i got my Q9550 OEM about 5months ago. They gone up since then though.

You cannot compare the i7 to the Q9550 in terms of price.

You can get RAM and a Mobo for the Q9550 for under £100 where as the i7 it is what £200 for the mobo alone!

It was £194.99 ex VAT the other day!

It was on this week only.

I'm also considering making a similar move. E8400 @ 3.5 to this... I game and do a bit of video encoding. Want something with better overclockability than this E8400 pants clocker and want faster desktop and encoding performance.

To be fair there aren't many LGA 1366 boards out yet so there's not a lot of choice. Also, a Q9550 is still a relatively expensive chip. Would you really want to go for a budget <£70 motherboard on a new build with it?

I think some people are missing the point. OP has a motherboard and enough ram, both would work fine with a Q9550 and he wouldn't have to change anything so all he needs to pay for is the Q9550....

So he isn't spending at £240 on an i7 CPU then another £200 for mobo and £100 for ram.

So he's better off spending £220 on a chip that will last him a fair amount of time rather than ~ £600 on a whole new system that will last him slightly longer.

Im trying to decide aswell - got an E5200 as I was gonna get a E8500 E0, but was thinking to go the whole hog and get a Q9550 E0 instead. Couple of questions:

1) The EO stepping is widely available now I assume?
2) I mainly game on my PC so thought a Quad would be overkill, but with things like GTA4, its now coming into the picture. Am I mad?
3) Considering the above could a cheaper Quad just be better? I presume the alternative would be the Q6600
4) Whats a good price for these now? Have they gone up or is it just me? Thought they were around £200 retail but must have been mistaken...

Hope you dont mind the post yoyo50...

TIA

I know it was directed at Yoyo but I think I can answer a few...

1. Yes.
2. No, if you are looking to upgrade and looking to play GTA 4 then a quad would definitely be handy, the performance will be pretty similar to a Wolfdale in most games but better in GTA 4.
3. Q6600's are good chips but the Q9550's are newer, better clocking, run cooler and faster to begin with.
4. I think around £220 you can expect to pay now, they have shot up in price recently and the unfortunately means that we have to pay around £20-£30 extra.

1) Yes, all the C1s are gone. Of course the C1 is still a very impressive chip!
2) Games are starting to use Quad e.g. Far Cry 2 and GTA IV. It will also help if you have a monster of a graphics card.
3)Q6600 is outdated now. Q9550 is much better value and an amazing overclocker.
4)Bought mine for £200. Prices fluctuate a lot though, especially with the exchange rate between the UK and US at the moment. Just be patient.

Cheers guys for the reply, wasnt directed at the OP other than apoligising if I took the thread on a tangent...

Cheapest Ive found it is £240 retail so perhaps Ill wait for a drop - amazed its jumped by so much in only a few months, Ive only just gone to an E5200 from an X2 so it still seems fast to me, its only GTA4 thats made me think about it :p.

My GFX card is only a G92 8800GTS 512Mb so I know I need to upgrade that but was hoping to wait for the next gen (always try and skip a generation).

Actually considering Im looking to fork out £200 I could replace the CPU or the GPU - which one would be better to do first?
