Q9650 Overclocked

q9650 @ 4050 (450x9) on Rampage Formula. 2x2Gb Kingston HyperX. 24/7 full load (SETI@home) in Windows. Vcore 1.336. Core temps 50-55c (custom watercooling). Longest uptime has been 22 days.

q6600 @ 3200 processes SETI MB workunit in 45-52 mins.
q9650 @ 4050 does them in 32-40 mins

Yeah 4Ghz is possible with them on air I think, as long as you have a good quality heatsink and fan.
Is it worth it? If you're playing games then no, nothing will be maxing out your current processor and you'd be better off upgrading the graphics cards if games aren't running fast enough. Even if you're encoding and using software that uses all four cores, you may only see 10-15% increases (that's what I've read). Temps will drop a little because it's 45nm tech but, £270, I wouldn't say was worth the price.

Like already being said, you need to make sure it's worth the upgrade cost.

99% of q9650 will do 4ghz on stock volts or very slightly higher so just a reasonable air cooler required.

Decent ones iwht good cooling and good mobo (p45) will do 4.4 to 4.5Ghz.

Clock per clock they are approx 10% faster than the q6600 so a 4Ghz q9650 would be equivalent to a 4.4Ghz q6600.

However, little gain in games as your q6600 at 3.3Ghz probably isn't being stressed now in all but a few games.

Encoding will see a major boost.
