Q9650 overclocking problems

Not huge problems, but i am finding it hard to get it stable at 4ghz on my P35c DSR3. I am using a fsb of 440 and a vcore of 1.38 (though hardware monitor + cpuz show it to be about 1.31 after v droop).

Do i need more v-core? i reckon i might do but it is allready starting to run fairly hot. Intel burn test is pushing the cores to 65 ish whilst prime sits around 60 and this is starting to get a bit too hot for my liking.Cooler is sycthe ifinity with 3x 120 mm fans. I guess i could try reseating the heatsink aswell to get temps down.


It did go for 3.5 hours on prime last night but the 3rd core failed.

Could it be my RAM? i mean its only rated at 800mhz (geil value 6400) and i am having to run it at 880?

Was it prime blend or small fft's you were running when it failed?

The vcore is more than ample for this chip at that speed. You should be able to get away with a touch less to be honest.

I don't have any experience of your mb although is it happy to run a fsb of 440? It is possible that the problem may lie there.
 
Prime Blend

Well i ran my old cpu (e6320) at 442 fsb for a while stable. This q9650 seems to be fine at 3600mhz on stock volts but any more it is temperamental (blue screens e.t.c.). I could probably up the volts but its simply getting too hot.

I am just worried it may be my ram.Ive got 4 stick of 800mhz ram and i guess if just one of those sticks doesnt like to overclock it is doomed to fail.

However when i do push the fsb over 400 it will only post and get into windows if i raise the cpu voltage so it leads me to believe it could also be the cpu.
 
I'm not sure what it will be called in your bios although that sounds about right. It's MCH Core on mine.

I'm not sure if my settings would be of much use as it's a P45 board and generally needs less volts for the NB.

It might be an idea to play about with that and see what difference it makes. I usually do small fft's in Prime first and when it's passed a good run of them move on to a blend test. I don't have a wealth of experience like some on here although I've found it helpful to do it that way.

i may play around with that northbridge voltage then. Don't want it to overheat though and im not sure any of the temp monitor's show me my northbridge temp unless it is the 'system temp' in HW monitor.

If not i may just enjoy it at 3.6ghz for a bit and get some more ram in a few weeks to see if that helps.
 
I'm not sure what the max roughly is for the P35 boards. I've never had to have mine over 1.42 at anything I've gone for although I do appreciate it will be different on a P35.

I'm sure someone will be able to jump on and give you a better answer though.
 
Im having the same issue i can hit 3.6 gig easy as soon as i get to 3.8 then boom bsod although i aint changed any volts not sure if this is it o have a q9650 with a p5n t delux board also a asus silent knight II heat sink with OCZ x2 2 gb stick of htc reaper ram 1066 mode so not sure what my wall is i hit any views :P
 
For me to get to 4ghz, I had to up the vcore to 1.35 in the bios, up the nb to 1.4, and decrease my ram settings from 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-15. Now my Q9650 idles at 34c and 54c under Prime 95 blend.

I need 1.38v idle, 1.34 load, using OCCT v3 for measurments. Some chips need a lot less than this some need more, I had a Q9650 that need much more for 4ghz. Mine will do 4.2ghz at 1.41v load but dont like to push it to much.
What volts are you giving the ram and what timings, PC6400 should easy do 880mhz mine does 1000 with ease doing 880 with the lowest setting.
My bios settings

vcore 1.41875
CPU-PLL 1.5
FSB term (VTT) 1.26
NB voltage 1.43
SB 1.1v

My board is P5E X38

I didn't actually realise there was that much of a difference between these chips. Most of the results I'd seen from people on here had been very similar to mine although as I'd said I don't exactly have a wealth of experience compared to some here.

Have you had any luck with it yet, Jono8?

I haven't touched my clock in months although think I might play about with it today...could do with seeing what it could do with ArmA 2 around the corner. :D
 
To be fair, my board is an older chipset, so maybe that is why I need more, dont need too much NB volts though, some people are getting good clocks on a lot lower volts than me, some are needing more.
Think it is pot luck really, still happy with mine, much better than the first one I had.
