Q9650 & Super Pi = 28 seconds!!!!? WTF

Guys, new question related to my problem. Is it possible that switching out a Q6600 for the Q9650 without reinstalling windows or upgrading any system drivers is to blame? I know for a mobo swap you need to reinstall windows but for a cpu swap I didnt think it was necessary.

Doubtful. I guess you could try a format but the CPU isn't typically something that requires one.

Check in MSCONFIG (type in Windows search box) Boot Tab Advanced options that number of processors is 4.

No, this should always be left as default.

Everest benchmark is flawed if you have speedstep enabled. Everest wont do enough for the cpu to clock up so you get the low score.

No explenation for the low super-pi score though. I get 15s @3600

That hasn't ever been the case for me when using the benchmarks on a Q6600.

So after changing out my processor back to the Q6600.... The system refused to boot. Fans were going, lights on, but no beeps and no posting. I tried swapping out the ram for another system = no dice. Tried reseating the CPU and HS and no dice. Tried resetting the bios and clearing CMOS. Nothing..... I'm done with this motherboard. Ordered a Asus P5Q Pro five minutes ago.

I had a similar problem with a q6600 / gigabyte board, turned out the board was borked essentially leaving one core at a lower speed than the other, I'd oc to 3.6 but one core would stick at 1600. rma'd board and q6 was fine with the replacement

Should I upgrade my ram once I get my new Asus P5Q mobo? I do plan to overclock my Q9650 from 3.0ghz to 3.8ghz++ which I think is doable with my DDR 800. Is there any real benefit to going to 4gb DDR 1300 etc?

I would go with the RAM you have & see where that gets you.

Pity OcUK didn't have a stargate, you could have got the new mobo quicker that way ;)

If you get the FSB up to say 425 that would be 3825 Mhz for the CPU then the ram would be running 425x2 DDR 850.
Should handle that so no real need to buy faster memory.

Alrighty. Got the P5Q delivered yesterday and loaded windows 7 RC without a hitch to the Raptor. Ran Super PI with everything at stock levels and it rang in at 14 secs! Not bad I think. That is with everything on AUTO in the bios too. I will be overclocking later tonight after work. Happy days.

This is a wonderful clocker. Sitting @ 4.140 ghz @ 460 FSB , Vcore @ 1.376v, Memory @ 2.2v.

Ok and here is the kicker... Super PI 1M completed in a blistering 11~ seconds! :)
