Q9650 temp query (yes... yet another!)

Hi

Just purchased a Q9650 and a Zalman CNPS9500A HSF

Besides the hassle of removing the motherboard to fit the back plate (which also went on better when I put it on the right way round... plonker) and removing and re-fitting all components to allows me to do it (time consuming). All appears to have gone OK so far...

First thing I checked was the core temps (realtemp / coretemp) and at idle:
Core - temp
0 - 27
1 - 25
2 - 39
3 - 38

Slightly panicked!!! So re-fitted cooler, not easy when mobo in the case!

And idle temps pretty much the same after re-fitting.

Ran PRIME95 on all cores:

0 - 45
1 - 42
2 - 41
3 - 40

So looks like cores 2/3 do move upwards but always come back to 39/38

Question... is this a case of stuck "temp sensors"? and if so, should I worry? and should I be looking at an RMA here? I have looked at other threads but still a bit "twitchy" considering what the CPU cost!

At the moment the coolers fan is running full blast. Don't know why, as BIOS is set to control it Auto!? Starting to wonder if I NEED to use the fanmate that comes with it, or it just runs full tilt?

Don't worry about it tbh, had two stuck sensors on my Q9650 so on idle it was like yours, but as long as they move under load then its fine as least you will know its not overheating (which you wouldn't know if they were completely stuck and didnt move at all!)

Have you done the sensor test in realtemp? see what they mark it as for sensor movement?

The fan on the CNPS9500A is not a PWM fan, so the BIOS cannot control it and it will always run at full blast if connected directly to the MB.

Cores 3&4 don't go below 38C on my Q9650 either. It's a common problem on the 45nm CPUs. Don't worry about it - the core temp readings aren't supposed to be very accurate until they get hotter anyway.

Thanks for that. I was starting to wonder if that was the case.

Got the fanmate it came with set up now. Reduced fan speed to around 2000 RPM and MUCH quieter, with no apparent reduction in cooling. Pretty impressed with this little cooler.

Yep I've tried that and with the case door shut (been open before this for testing purposes), once the cores appear to get above the "stuck" temps, they start to move up pretty much in sync with the other cores. All around 45/50C in the CPU torture test. Though core 0 does appear to run a couple of degrees hotter but sure I've seen somewhere that this is normal as well.

So I'm assuming that this is OK. Panic over for now I think.

Thanks for the assurance. You would have thought that they might have sorted this by now!? Or is it just a matter of a design fault!?

Well I don't think that is a problem with the 45 nm CPUs because mine (Q8200) has Core 1@32*,Core 2@34*,Core 3@36 and Core 4 @ 27 and this is after a full day of browsing the internet and playing some games from time to time.
